Linux Install

I am installing RH9. I remember that there used to be an option to install over the network in a previous version. Is this still an option? I want to boot from install CD on box 'a' and install linux on box 'b' across the network. I know there used to be an option to do that. Help is appreciated.

Re: Linux Install

If I get your question right the answer is no, you can not boot on RH 9 cd on 1 system and install from there on an other.

One methode is to copy the iso files of the RH cds onto a network reacheable system/mount point, boot the target system with rh9 cd or floppy and do a remote install onto the target system.

This is all very clear in the following doc/link.
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/

Frankly I could not write is so well.

Keep use informed.

Re: Linux Install

hi,
I have never seen this option you described, (but maybe you have right)

Another possibility is installation via nfs, smbfs or ftp
(also you can try export the /cdrom mount point from server A via nfs but I am not sure it will
work)

Re: Linux Install

Ji RPM,

I think Huc is right,

You must boot from the box you want to install, the boot could be with Install CD or you can create a boot disquette with network support. In the CD install 1 you have instructions to create a boot disquette with network support in order to install via network.

In the server side you need to copy all install CDs under some accesible place, you can put it under some user directory to access it via ftp or nfs. If you don't want to configure nfs server services you can configure ftp services and install via ftp.

Once you have configured ftp or nfs services (it is possible to do the installation via httpd), you can boot the client side (where you need to install) and follow the instructions.

Linux?. Yes, of course.

Re: Linux Install

I'm looking to do the same thing via an ftp share. My problem is what to copy and how to structure the files from the CD's. Any suggestions?

Re: Linux Install

When I was using RedHat I just copied the whole
CD to disk. It worked fairly well.

I generally use Debian now which does install from the net.

Re: Linux Install

All versionis of Linux that I have looked at have a network install feature.

You can put the contents of the cdrom's on a nfs or ftp server and do it that way. You can even do it across the public Internet.

There is a link on most distributions page that shows you how to create the boot disk you need for that process.
