Linux on Itanium

Some of our products are faced with the following situation: Applications are built and compiled on 32-bit mode, but we would like to execute and run Linux on HP Itanium which is 64-bit. When we checked with Red Hat they have informed us that their Linux package includes supplementary discs for the Intel Itanium2 architecture – Intel’s IA-32 Execution Layer and 32-bit compatibility packages – which together provide a runtime environment for 32-bit applications on the 64-bit native distribution. However, Red Hat does not support what’s on the supplementary discs. Does HP provide any type of support for Intel’s IA-32 Execution Layer and 32-bit compatibility packages running on HP Itanium?

Are the products that 32-bit-centric you cannot get them 64-bit clean and compile them native on Itanium rather than running emulated x86?

Maybe this is out of line but Do you necessarily need Linux on IA64 ? Hpux is a fully supported operating system with supported compilers and tools. Many Linux based tools and applications are also available for HPUX and since they are HPUX they can run on IA64 on HPUX.

If you write your code carefully it could get recompiled on any Unix OS but I understand why you want the IA64 chipset with its performance but if you want a fully supported OS why is HPUX not a choice ?

because linux kicks hpux in the nuts.

anyway, if you have the source of your programs available i suggest you simply recompile them, that should solve your problem.

hpux supports redhat, but they don't support more then what redhat does, so i don't think they will be supporting this specific piece of software either.

Red Hat has an entire distribution intended for IA-64 Itanium systems. It ships with a 32 bit compatibility tool set, for applications written to for 32 bit.

Best course of action is to recompile your applications on platform and then test them.

The question is: if we need technical support while recompiling and testing our applications using Intelâ s IA-32 Execution Layer and 32-bit compatibility packages running on HP Itanium, can we count on HP to provide the technical support? Is the HP response center setup for this? Thx in advance.

Just so everyone remembers and doesn't get confused:

Under "linux" IA64 systems are native 64-bit, offering emulated 32-bit x86 support, but not native 32-bit support.

Under HP-UX IA64 systems offer native instruction set support for both 64-bit and 32-bit, and emulated support for 32-bit and 64-bit PA-RISC.
