						gentoo as well:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-hppa.xml
don't forget to check hw compatibility list:
http://www.pateam.org/list.html
or at parisc-linux.org's site (that's debian port afaik, but the compatibility issues are the same). Do not expect linux to run flawlessly on prehistoric systems like C,E,B,D class, however the new rp boxes "should" be fine... as one can never be 100% sure with linux anyways.

						Shalom,
It will work but the choices are much more limiting and I'd question the production quality of some of these releases.

HP-UX basic is $300, is that a huge expense for a very reliable OS?

If you are only going to use it as a "sandbox" or a learning environment, then there is no good reason not to try Linux on the box.
If you plan on using it in a production environment, I would have to mirror SEP's sentiments.
$300US may seem like an investment at the time, but it will seem very small if the chosen Linux distro actually does fail for whatever reason and forces unscheduled downtime.
