LVM on Linux - Same as HP-UX?

Have not touched Linux Storage management in a while.

Is the LVM subsystem on Linux (by Sistina?) the same in operation, terminology and commands as LVM on HP-UX?

LVM for Linux was not a port.

A HP-UX/LVM entusiast or group thereof decided the Linux world could not live without the functionality.

I for one have managed to run Linux boxes without ever using LVM for some years not.

It is designed to be functionally equivalent and most of the commands work the same way.

Mirror/ux is not build in but the built in free Linux mirroring tools work quite well with LVM logical volumes.

I used it several times during hands on classes and my HP-UX/LVM knowledge was directly transferrable.

LVM1 usage on linux is very similar to the LVM commands on HPUX, you'll feel right at home. Important to note is that these implementation are not compatible with eachother.

Mirroring etc is taken care of the MD layer in linux, so there was no need to recreate the same functionality within LVM.

I found it the same, only a bit easier on Linux. I can't recall exactly, but there were commands in the Linux version that gave better output, and I seem to remember that input was easier for one part also. I also liked that using lvm, I could shoot below the dos/fdisk issues and use the whole disk, just like in HPUX. Meaning - you've got your choice, use the hard/primary soft/secondary partitions of fdisk, or just use the whole /dev/sd device to get at the whole disk, and skip the whole partition idea. I actually thought that it was quite nice.
