Re: Modem doesnt detect, please help
winmodems, winprinters etc are cheap hardware devices that don't have all their clever things in hardware. Instead, the operating system does all the work thus slowing your machine down rather unnecesarily. Sadly, the "Win" part of the name does as it suggests, ie, needs Windows. Unfortunately Linux does not support winmodems very well but there is some hope.

Re: Modem doesnt detect, please help
Oh you hit on a iceberg on a cold pitch black night.
Winmodems are "kind of modems" that rely on software signals rather than normal harware modems. They delegate most of the work to the processor.
To support them in Linux is hard because there is no standard interface with those modems. Every manufacturer has its own implementation.

Meanwhile I can get back to you on that 3COM modem.
Check also http://www.tuxmobil.org/mylaptops.html if you have this on a laptop by anychance

Re: Modem doesnt detect, please help
Last time, I have installed a winmodem driver on my own PC with redhat 7.3.
I downloaded this driver from www.linuxant.com/drivers.
Installation very simple.
Working very fine.
