OpenSSH on SUSE Linux vs. SUSE Linux Enterprise

A recent request to upgrade OpenSSH on all of our systems (HP-UX and SuSE Linux) has opened up a can of worms and I could use some information from those who use SUSE to clarify something.

We are using SUSE Linux 9.1 and 10.0 on several systems. OpenSSH 4.1p1 is installed on both these versions. On an older 9.0 system, I see version 3.7.1p2. I have version 10.1 installed on a desktop with OpenSSH 4.2p1 included.

The specific question I have is what version of OpenSSH is available for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10? Novell's website claims security patches have limited availability and there are no software updates available for the non-Enterprise versions. There appear to be no updates for the 10.0 version through YaST Online Update even though the newer version is included in 10.1.

The more general question is... Are there really differences in the patches and updates available for the Enterprise edition? The person responsible for our Linux infrastructure is swearing there's no difference and the Enterprise price is strictly for support, not updates, which he deems of no value. Given the lack of available updates that I've looked for on the updates mirrors for slightly older community versions of SUSE, I'm not seeing the equivalence.

Re: OpenSSH on SUSE Linux vs. SUSE Linux Enterprise

I've poked around on Novell's web site a bit this morning. Looks like they released OpenSSH 4.2p1 on 10/23/06 as security update for the Enterprise versions of SUSE Linux. Presumably, it would show up in YaST to install. It's looking less and less like there's an equivalence of updates available between the ENterprise and non-Enterprise versions (as Novell specifies in their comparison of the products web page).

Re: OpenSSH on SUSE Linux vs. SUSE Linux Enterprise

Shalom,

openssh-4.2p1-18

Thats not a copy it could be a 1 or an l after the p.

As far as its compatability with other versions of Suse, unknown.

They want you to pay, is that a big surprise.

In the long run so does Larry, $40,000/CPU Ellison. Sorry about the editorial remarks.

Re: OpenSSH on SUSE Linux vs. SUSE Linux Enterprise

Actually found the patch for openssh-4.1p1-10.9, which is the version apparently "supported" to fix the latest security issue for 10.0 SUSE Linux. I looked at a system that was pointed to a mirror site that wasn't up-to-date so it showed nothing available. Joy joy.
