PDQ works as root, but not as user

New to Linux. Have setup the printers through the "xpdq" wizard logged in as root, and I can print using "pdq" as root, but not as user. The /etc/pdq/printrc has rwx permissions of 755. Even if I setup the printers logged in as a user, so that the configuration is written to their own ~/.printrc, then the user still cannot print.

What is restricting them?

Thanks
Desiree

Re: PDQ works as root, but not as user

have you checked for permissions and ownership in /var/spool/lpd? or equivalent?

also.. check the following file (we run RedHat.. this may be specific to this OS)

/etc/lpd.perms file...
/etc/lpd.conf file

the conf file will set where the perms file is located and the perms file controls access to lpd. Maybe this is not set properly. I am not a linux expert, but this may be your problem.

Re: PDQ works as root, but not as user

The users' home areas were on an NFS mounted filesystem, which root could not write to. PDQ seems to need write access as root. When I re-exported the filesystem with the "no_root_squash" option, users were able to print.

Are any pprinter/permission errors logged on /var/wog/messages ?
