Porting From Redhat 5.2 To Redhat 9.0

Hi,
I am running Redhat Linux 5.2 (Apollo), I
am running Sendmail and LDAP on this
server, since the kernel is too old and had
never been upgraded. I want to do it now
since i am facing too much problem nw with
this server.

Please tell me how can port my exisiting
setup to the new server without too hassle
and running here and there I will be
installing Redhat linux 9.0 on a new
machine.

A detailed reply would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Amit Dixit.

backup your LDAP and sendmail config.
You can also backup the bin if you still want to run these versions.

Setup Redhat ( I wont elaborate here ).

Setup Redhat's LDAP and sendmail with your backed-up config or restore your old setups.

These services are pretty standard so it shouldnt be a problem to upgrade.

Good Decision.

Your server must be pretty old by now.

I would recommend setting up the Red Hat 9 on a different piece of hardware and gradually migrate functions until the old server can be shut down. Prior post instructions are good.

If the hardware is to be re-used once its out of production you can add memory, disk whatever and migrate your operation back to the original server.

If you can afford a new server my plan will work even better.

This is how I am handling a migration from 7.3 to 9.0

Re: Porting From Redhat 5.2 To Redhat 9.0

That would be a hell of a long reply to give to answer all the issues of upgrading from 5.2 to 9.0 ...

The best I can suggest is to follow the steps under the following link

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/archive.html

This where the old version doc are archived the manual for install/upgrade from 5.2 to 7.2 are all in there ... the rest from 7.2 to 9.0 are in

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/

You dont in fact have to do all the version one after the other (like from 7.2 to 9.0) is possible in one step

I would use Mondo/Mindi for backup/restore but you should try this to make sure this is supported in 5.2 .

I would then restore to new hardware ... try and boot this ... you will have some issues here because of different hardware (also have to give it different name ip etc )... but this should be managable ..

I would then upgrade on new hardware until 9.0 solving each error and problem at each upgrade

when this is done and tested... then test again .. until you are fed-up

ask user to stop using live server/system

mondo backup/restore the applics from old to new one last time to synchronize.

take the old system of the net

switch node name ip address from old sys to new sys reboot this new system watch for error/correct ... backup new system ( cause if this get crash now you will lose al your good work ) .. when you feel ready put this onto the net test and ask user to report error.

I would keep Old system of line and let the new run for a couple of weeks (more is safer)

Please note the above is only a meta scenario
adapt, your are the only one who knows what is realy needed and what important in your enviroment

hope this help
