Problem using Multitech modem with Red Hat Linux 6.2

I have a Multitech ISI5634PCI/4 modem card in my Red Hat Linux server. I've downloaded and installed the drivers for this card and set up getty's in /etc/inittab to listen for requests on the modem ports.
I have a laptop PC connected directly to one of the Linux modem ports and I'm trying to establish a connection between the two using kermit but with no success.
When I try to connect, the Linux server reports 'No carrier detected'. The modem signals appear as follows :
Line: /dev/ttyM1a
speed: 9600
mode: local
modem: multitech
Parity: none
stop-bits: (default) (8N1)
Duplex: full
flow: rts/cts
handshake: none
Carrier-watch: auto
close-on-disconnect: off
Lockfile: /var/lock/LCK..ttyM1a
Terminal bytesize: 7, escape character: 28 (^\)
Carrier Detect (CD): Off
Dataset Ready (DSR): Off
Clear To Send (CTS): Off
Ring Indicator (RI): Off
Data Terminal Ready (DTR): On
Request To Send (RTS): Off
When I try connecting using kermit on the PC, I get an error reporting 'No response timeout'.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance for your support.

Hi there.
You did not say, whether you use a modem to modem connection or a pc to modem connect.
No carrier detect means, that the modem cannot detect a carrier signal, on which it could synchronize. if you use a modem to modem connect, both modems should be set to send carrier signals.
You'd be better off with a connection between two com ports and a nullmodem cable or a small network.
