Re: problem with installation

Shalom Sunny,

It would be helpful to know what kind of laptop we are talking about and to see the error message.

Many laptops don't support Linux at all.

If I am not mistaken, opensuse 7 is pretty old. Perhaps if your laptop is new, a newer version of opensuse might support this hardware.

Re: problem with installation

Advice:

1) Make new media. Maybe the DVD is scratched.
2) Try a text based installation.
3) Carefully, following manufacturers guidelines clean the lasers in the DVD player.
4) Consider a different distribution of Linux, at least for a test.

Re: problem with installation

Hi Sunny,
Dont worry, we can work this out.

1)Even if you loose boot loader you still can recover windows using a xp install disk.
- boot the system to recovery mode using XP cd

- get a recovery console and type
fixboot

2)i think SEP has a point.
if u see your system got stuck at udev point
it shows it has some problems in initializing the devices for installation.

Maybe you have problem with your original media. so even if you copied another form that the result would be the same.

I suggest you get a lower version of Suse and try install it out. or download it again and try.

Tel me what is the result after that

Also if you dont want to loose any thing please get a disk image....Just in case ;-)

Good Luck....!

I think 'fixmbr' is more appropriate command in this case.

Sunny, when you boot your system with the media, at SUSE Welcome screen select the 'Safe Settings' option.

Re: problem with installation

boot the system via XP installation media, then XP Installation will ask you to press R for recovery, at that stage press 'R' to get the Recovery Console

Re: problem with installation

>Where is the safe setting option???
boot the system via OpenSUSE media, at the first screen or Welcome Screen which ask you
1, Boot from Hard drive
2, Installation
3,
4, Safe Settings
5, Rescue

Select the "Safe Settings" from the installation menu.

i.e start your installation using the 'Safe Setting' option from the Installation menu.

Re: problem with installation

Hi Sunny,
Wel in that case im over 80% sure that your CD/DVD rom is faulty. Use external(USB) one and try the process.
This is the last comes to my head.

Maybe Maaz can have more options....

Re: problem with installation

Hi Sunny the only way to isolate this problem is to use external boot media.
FYI
I have seen some boot CDs which unable to boot system but allows to reads it contains.
