Proliant H/W monitoring

1. What are PSP, SIM? what is the relationship between them? Can PSP be configured to send SNMP trap to email out without SIM? The OS is Linux, not window.
2. PSP installation is not just once, it needs be installed every time kernel is updated which is huge draw back for folks wondering between Dell and Proliant H/W. If kernel does get updated and PSP is not reinstalled, will the H/W monitoring totally lost? Each change involving kernel change will have very complicated situation when change is failed, since no one knows if it is caused by PSP or the other kernel change part and etc...
Any real experience and suggestions are welcome. We are preparing a project involving >30 Linux cluster systems. Dell or HP Proliant? Thank you.

1.) PSP = Proliant Support Pack. It includes all the hardware monitoring drivers and configuration utilities for Proliant hardware. Some components of PSP are optional, like the SMH (System Management Homepage).

SIM = System Insight Manager. It is a tool for centralizing the management of multiple servers into one interface.

If you install the SMH, you can configure each system to send SNMP traps and some email alerts by using the web interface at https://:2381.

SNMP traps can probably be configured without the SMH too, but the configuration is easier to do with the SMH.

2.) Modern versions of PSP will automatically detect new kernel at system boot time, and will automatically re-compile the necessary drivers if the appropriate kernel-devel package for the new kernel version is installed.

If the auto-recompile fails, it usually indicates that the installation pre-requisites of PSP were not met, i.e. someone did not read the PSP installation instructions.
