Redhat Linux cannot boot after BIOS update.
Hi all,
We updated an Hp Proliant DL580 G2 server with a new ROM version and rebooting the server hangs at point "setting up hostname=xxxxxxx OK"
What could this problem be attributed to and how can we resolve this?
Thank you.

Re: Redhat Linux cannot boot after BIOS update.
It looks like something is non functional while the system tries to initialize the network subsystem. Unfortunately you have not provided enough information for an educated reply.
Assuming you were retrieving the network information via DHCP, the error message might suggest a non functional network card... or just a defective or unplugged cable. But since there are plenty of other scenarios available, please come back with more info.
However, if I were you I would start in runlevel 3 (without rhgb !) and press "I" (capital I) when prompted (in order to execute the initscripts step by step) and skip network initialization. If the rest of the services start OK, you should dig into the network part of your setup. If not.. more info is needed for proper answers.

Re: Redhat Linux cannot boot after BIOS update.
Thanks Manuel,
The problem actually started with trying to install a second card Hp NC1020 that had no drivers on the system. Shutting the machine down spawned endless messages below:
kernel: kmod:runaway modprobe loop assumed and stopped
kernel: kmod:failed to exec /sbin/modprode -s -k binfmt-0000, error=8
Rebooting just hang at point "setting hostname=XXXXX OK"
the addressing is static. I tried going int "I" to no success.
grub > root ( doesn't show any devices.
Using SCISI RAID 1 logical volume.
I am a newbie to Linux (RH 3.0). How do I get into runlevel 3?
regards
