Regular Reboot of Servers

Regular Reboot of Servers

What is the opinion on regular, biweekly and monthly reboots of HP Unix Servers that run Oracle Servers in a
Web based environment. Is is good preventive maintenance?
Or what proactive steps can be taken to not have to reboot. Or, do you just run them till something happens, ie. memory/cpu utilization too high that demands a reboot.
Please advise on opinions. Any related HP documents supporting either side would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Regular Reboot of Servers

Hi,

There are systems which are rebooted only once in 4-6 months .

All that matters is the room temperature , dustfree environment. Proper server resource planning, system tunning and downtime planning.

Re: Regular Reboot of Servers

Well, this is just an opinion, as you require one, but we say here that this reboot story is mainly valid for security purpose.
If your ps or top doesn't show anything specialthen you do not need to reboot.
But if an hidden process is running, such like ADORE or others, and if a proper logging is not set through external box on promiscious mode, then you should reboot from time to time after cleaning your system.
But the more time goes, the less systems are to be rebooted. I've, among others, a web server on a RH 7.2 box, been working for a year and half without rebooting now, still efficient as on the first day...

Re: Regular Reboot of Servers

My opinion is simple : if none of the programs running on the server has memory leak, there is no need to reboot regularly.

However, in some cases it may be a good idea to plan regular reboots for maintenance purposes (patches that need rebooting, cable unplug/re-plug, upgrades, ...).

Good luck.
