Re: RHL 7.3, but no network conn.

Does your nic card support Linux??
I know on my system I had to install the driver on the floppy disk that came with my nic card before I got networking to work.

Depending on what kind of NIC card you got there should be a Linux driver and how to that will help you out.

Hmm,

Name [00000003] SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Adapter Type Ethernet 802.3
Product Type SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

This driver is supposedly available for modern linux kernels, but if you don't have it in your distribution, then check out this site to get the source:

http://www.sis.com/support/driver/linux.htm

If XP detects the device and Linux doesn't, it's probably that the driver isn't compiled in or available as a in your kernel.

Re: RHL 7.3, but no network conn.

THank you for the note about the patch - I found 2.4.19 on the 2nd url.

But can you point me to a place which describes "how" to patch a kernel? Have not not that before, but am willing to read how and try it.

thx.

Re: RHL 7.3, but no network conn.

Please note that out of the box, Since version 7 RedHat installs with all ports blocked unless you specify otherwise.

You can't even telnet to the box without making a configuration change.

In a graphical startup you can click into the firwall configuration and open up the ports you want openned.

This assumes your NIC card is good.

At the console, type ipconfig

If you get answers for eth0 or eth1 and whatnot, your cards are recognized.

There is an opportunity in setup to not have the firewall close anything, but its not intuitive.

Lastly, when upgrading from 7.2 7.3 the ftp configuation changes to chroot without notificaiotn. That needs to be corrected if you want your ftp clients to be able to access anything other than their local directory. This does not apply to anonymous ftp, I don't deal with that.
