segmentation fault on DL580 running SUSE 8
We have a Proliant DL580 server running
SuSE SLES 8 (powered by UnitedLinux 1.0) (i586) Kernel 2.4.21-138-smp (1). It has developed 2 problems:
1. On bootup and on shutdown, it keeps repeatedly reporting "segmentation faults" message. Dmesg and messages files do not register anything related to this error.
2. On login, it logs you in for a fraction of second and then ask you to login again. Most times you have to try on average around 8 times before it logs you in properly.
Has anyone come across a similar situation before? Or does anyone know where we can start shoot trouble? Any help will be welcomed. Mind you, I am a newbie with linux

Re: segmentation fault on DL580 running SUSE 8
Shalom,
This is a sign of a system wit deep problems.
Establish a session:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Then try and duplicate this problem. You will probably see some new messages.
Seems likely this system is under memory stress.
Running sar, sar -d and other utils should let you know if this is so.
