Sound volume control

I installed RedHat 7.2 on HP pavilion 7965 for use as a development tool. Sound works but is barely audible. I haven't yet found a way to control sound loudness. Is there a volume control for sound ??

Re: Sound volume control

Thanks for your reply !!

I spent some time with gnome but couldn't find gnome-volume-control utility. It wasn't in the utilities menu and it wouldn't run from the command line.

How to find it ???

Re: Sound volume control

You may have a driver problem.

A lot of those pavillion sound cards don't work really well with Linux. You may need to figure out who built the sound components for HP and go to them for better drivers.

Re: Sound volume control

Thanks for the response. I think my next computer will be custom built with components known to work with Linux.

Re: Sound volume control

you can actually check if you do have a sound problem with sndconfig utility .It's quite simple and if you here a voice of Linus at the end then the operating system does recognize the sound on your pc

Re: Sound volume control

Just wanted to suggest to you that you install a newer release of Red Hat than 7.2 which is ancient by now. Look at fedora.redhat.com for the current release and mirrors to download ISO images from.

Re: Sound volume control

Thanks again for all your response !!

sndconfig does work to get barely audible sound but the recording runs about 4 times normal speed ??

Guess an upgrade is in order as you suggest. But it seems strange that there wouldn't be a sound volume comtrol ?

personally, for simple audio controls, I use aumix.
