suse 9.1 pro - modem issues

I have just installed SuSe 9.1 Pro on a Pavillion ZE5400 (ZE5416EA)

Everytime I try and dial my ISP up, the whole system hangs - and i have to hard reboot (ie hold the power button down until it reboots)

so

I think SuSe has (for some unkown reason) picked the wrong Modem driver, but i am lost as to what modem is in the machine as standard.... I cant find it anywhere...

help

Re: suse 9.1 pro - modem issues

Suse might have picked the wrong modem driver because the hardware itself isn't certified for Suse.

I've seen hundreds of posts complaining about Pavillion's and their Linux hardware support. Red Hat/Fedora seems to have slightly better hardware support than Suse.

You may wish to try that distribution.

I would bet that you have an AC-Link modem. Try

lspci -vv

as root from the command line. Somewhere in the output you should see mention of a modem.

On most of the ze4000/ze5000 series, the modem is an AC-Link (Winmodem). This modem is not directly supported in any distribution (including Red Hat) that I know about. You can get a driver (for a price) from Conexant, or this modem is also supposedly supported by SmartLink.

this is probably an internal PCI modem? i talked about these here: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=610010

long story short: consider getting a real ISA modem, or an external modem. little more expensive, but 100% linux certified cause it's just a serial port, K.I.S.S.
