System log

We are running the RH 8.0 system , if the system was halt suddenly , which system log will report it ? which log should I check to find the halt reason ? thx.

I think you should look into /var/log/messages . This is the system log.

Hi

To find out the halt reason i think ypu should have a look in syslogd's logfiles which can be determined by viewing /etc/syslog.conf

If you just pull the plug, you might not get a stop message in /var/log/messages.

You will see plenty of complaints about dirty filesystems and fsck when you start the system back up.

If it's not in '/var/log/dmesg', '/var/log/boot.log' or '/var/log/messages', then it isn't logged.
One long-haired git at your service...
