There are many ways to change ulimit settings. Exactly what did you do to change it?

The usual way to change ulimit settings on Linux would be to edit /etc/security/limits.conf.

If you instead added some "ulimit" commands to some login script, please tell the name of the script file and the name and version of your Linux distribution (i.e. RHEL x.y, SuSE xx SP y, other?).
