One consideration: I use a uninteruptable power supply (basically a car battery hooked up to a 12v -220v invertor and have had it overheated recently - could this fry an on-board sound card?
Thanks again.

Re: ac '97 and xp - no sound
I would think you would fry something else long before you got to the sound card.

Re: ac '97 and xp - no sound
Yes the sound is onboard. I had it working before with a driver supplied to me by this firm? Now the same driver is freezing the system. So how come it don't work no more?
Should I try installing something in a different order?

SolutionYou could try looking in Device Manager to see what resources (IRQ) the sound is sharing and try to eliminate the conflict.
I would certainly download/install the latest 4-in-1 drivers from VIA's website: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2#4in1
The latest audio driver from MSI (motherboard mfgr) is dates Nov. 7, 2002 and available at http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_list.php?part=1&kind=3&CHIP=3&ID=1
I believe the latest BIOS is at http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=320&NAME=MS-6380E
but DOUBLE CHECK that this IS the correct link.
Good luck!
