I am having some audio problems with my laptop. Current operating system is XP home edition. Everytime I try and play a music file this is the message I get:
"cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding"
The sound use to work, so I know the hardware is available, but I don't know how to fix this problem. I thank and appreciate to anyone who can help me fix this problem.
Thank you

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
You can check if windows and directX detects any problems, go to START->run and type: dxdiag (hit enter)
IN the sound and music tab you can test your sound and at the bottum is displayed if there are any problems.
Something else you can try is to remove the soundcard, reboot and it will reinstall the soundcard.
Another thing is, did you test your speakers on another system? or can your test your soundcard with another speakers?
Have a nice day,
HTH, Ronald

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
First check the device manager and see if windows says the sound is working.
start >settings >control panel >system >hardware >device manager
Also in the Control Panel is a sound Icon. You can view even more info from that and test the system using sound files.
If all looks OK, try reloading the device driver for your particular sound card.
here is a link explaining the how to troubleshot your problem..

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM). I don't how to recognize if there is any problem or not there?
Is there anyway I can download the sound driver because I don't think I have the original cd? If so, where would I be able to download the driver?
Thanks

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
one more thing I forgot to add. When I tested the sound in the diagnostic for microsoft synthesizer...it prompted me with no sound driver found, but when I tested the sound with ESS Allegro the sound played. It seems like my sound card is working, but the microsoft synthesizer is not. I appreciate everyone that is helping me solve this problem.

How would I do what you are recommending? I am not a technical person.

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
If you think the sound card is working, then got to:
START > RUN and type in SNDVOL32
That will display your volume levels. Make sure of all the setting and that none are on MUTE. (check the OPTIONS > PROPERTIES too)

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
I tried that and I got an error message saying that there are no active mixer devices available. I don't know what to do? When I was doing the diagnostic the problem was with the microsoft synthesizer. Any other suggesstions.
Thanks everyone.

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
On the link I gave you, download the driver for your PC....

I know it seems technical, but see if you can find the right driver that matches the one already loaded. Check the wording in the device manager to match the download.

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
Windows XP ESS Audio and Modem Drivers for HP Omnibook XE3-GD/GE and Pavilion N5xxx-GD/GE
When downloading it was saying stuff like the one your downloading is older that the one already on your computer. I still let it download. It also said that this doesn't pass the windows logo test. I cancelled the downloading when it was going to download the modem drivers because I wasn't sure if that would mess up my internet connection. Should I let that download also?
Thanks

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
those are standard messages you were getting not to worry...
At least with this driver you have the driver name and version number to upgrade..

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
The problem is fixed. You won't believe what it was. It was something so minor, nothing to do with the driver. I went into msconfig, and checked the services that were running and stopped, and my window audio was not even checked! I checked it, restarted windows, and now everything is working. Thanks everyone for all the help. I still can't believe how simple the solution was, and why that was not checked to begin with I have no idea.
Thank you to all

Re: Audio Problem With Pavilion N5425...
Glad you got it fixed, yes if the service is not running it would not work, had not thought of that at first, because it would not normaly turn of.
Hope it stays on this time, but now you do know some more thing about windows sound configuration. Alsmost every problem has it advantages.
Have a nice day,
Regards, Ronald
