DV2418nr cannot detect CD drive

This notebook is having an issue with both Vista and XP. My CD/DVD drive is randomly not detected (usually only when I need it!). I've searched and found this issue reported by a number of people, but I've yet to find a fix. It does not show up in the device manager, but still lights up, opens, and spins.

I'd like to permanently cure this and not just get myself a quick answer to it. I can get it working if I go into the device manager and have it search for new plug and play devices two times. I've tried changing operating systems, reinstalling drivers, and even physically removing and replacing the drive.

What is making this happen!?! Its unbeleivably annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
