We all go through our checks and balances when a problem occurs but rarely ever do we check if our Admin account has proper Admin rights. It just doesn't make sense. However, MS tries to explain that a new control, the UAC, prevents malicious silent installations and attacks on your 2k8 server. To which I can see it does make this attempt to prevent because by default the UAC makes an admin take additional steps to run anything as an administrator with full rights and only grants standard user rights if you don't take the steps. Which means that if you try installing anything that requires full admin rights, the program will not install or if installed will not run. Additionally, if you disable the UAC, the server must be rebooted thus failing any malicious softwares attempt to run. It can stop an attacker from gaining access.
If you are having issues installing or running programs in any Win 2k8 Server under your Admin account and as a first step; check if the UAC (User Account Control) is enabled. This bugger of a control MS has incorporated into Win 2k8 Servers is driving many people nuts. Disabling this control restores full Admin rights to any user who has Admin rights but leaves your 2k8 server vulnerable to the attacks it was meant to prevent. Just remember, to reenable it after you perform your functions.
Here is the MS link... http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc709691(WS.10).aspx
Hope this helps out many new 2k8 admins.
