OS Boot Failure After Universal Restore – HP DL380 Gen10 Plus Server
Issue Description:
We performed a Universal Restore of a system image (taken from a different machine) onto this HP server. The tool restored the OS and ignored old drivers (as expected), but after rebooting, we are getting a Blue Screen error (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE).
: The same backup image was successfully restored and booted on a workstation, without any boot issues.
Should we enable the Smart Array SR option or switch from MR Storage to a different controller in BIOS/UEFI?
We are currently using MR Storage (MegaRAID) in UEFI mode.
Do we need to inject specific drivers (e.g., MegaRAID/SmarRAID) into the restored OS for it to recognize the storage at boot?
Is there an HP-recommended process for restoring a system image (from another machine) when using MegaRAID controllers and UEFI boot?
Could you provide the correct driver package or firmware tools we can use to ensure the OS can boot on this hardware?
thank you
Regards

Re: OS Boot Failure After Universal Restore – HP DL380 Gen10 Plus Server
Hi @farrukhhameed78 ,
The error is due to missing MegaRAID drivers in the restored OS, preventing boot volume detection.
The workstation restore worked because it likely used standard AHCI/SATA, unlike the server's MR controller.
- Smart Array SR or Switch Controller?
No need to switch from MegaRAID (MR) to Smart Array SR or another controller. Stick with MR to avoid RAID reconfiguration.
In UEFI (F9 at POST), ensure UEFI Boot Mode, UEFI Optimized Boot Order, and disable Secure Boot. Confirm logical drive is bootable in MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM, Ctrl+M). - Inject Drivers?
Yes, inject MegaRAID SAS drivers into the restored OS.
Process: Boot to Macrium Rescue Media, use Universal Restore, add HPE MegaSAS35 driver (from USB) for MR416i-a/p. Or use DISM offline: dism /image:C:\mount /add-driver /driver:"path\to\MegaSAS.inf" /recurse. - HPE Recommended Process for Image Restore?
Update firmware via SPP ISO (2025.03.00).
Use Macrium Universal Restore with MR drivers injected.
Post-restore: Run chkdsk /f, install HPE iLO agents, validate hardware (F2 at POST). - Driver/Firmware Tools?
Driver: HPE MR Gen10 Plus Controller Driver (MegaSAS35, 64-bit) from HPE Support.
Firmware: Update via SPP.
Download to USB, extract for injection.
If issues persist, boot to Safe Mode, install drivers, then disable Safe Mode.
