Pavillion ZD7020US - Powering on issues

Greetings,
I have an HP Pavillion ZD7020US. I have a very hard time powering this laptop on. I have to jam the power cord outlet into the laptop pretty hard to get it to come on. Once it does, it will boot up for approx 30secs to 1 minute. It appears the internal power is not connecting with the external power adapter. Is the internal power integrated on to the system board and also, can the laptop run on external power with no battery? Thank you
