Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I had a different but similar problem on my dv9600 under the sway of the Vista. On the quickplay, the mute and volume controls suddenly stopped working and the mute was stuck on (even though it glowed blue, not red). I tried the hard boot, reinstalled the quick launch drivers, played endlessly with the settings. No go.

Then I uninstalled the sound card driver (with the delete all files option checked) and reinstalled the latest driver from HP. Bingo!

Note that if you download a driver from HP, you need your exact model number which is on the sticker on the bottom of the machine.

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread. It helped a lot.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

Thanks a lot to the person who suggested to remove the battery and do a hard boot. That made the buttons work again.
That solved the problem. I suffered many hours trying to reinstall drivers/software with no effect.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

My fix for my Pavilion dv9500 CTO Notebook (Vista Ultimate 64bit) works well and combines much of above. The order is important to follow, and probably wil require all 3 steps:

1) turn off cpu, remove battery, remove power supply and hold down power button while dead for 10 secs. to suck any residual charge from board. Replace battery/power supply and restart.

If no workie then...

2)Uninstall "HP Quick Launch Buttons" from "programs and features" list. If asked to restart, select "NO." Before reboot, reinstall the newest quick launch button driver from HP. reboot.

If still no workie...

3)uninstall "Realtek high definition audio driver..." and select "no" if prompted for reboot. Re-install Realtek sound driver and reboot.

If no workie, try another reboot.

Thanks all for solving what the pros can't solve!!

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

Unfortunately, though the fix I listed above worked initially, the buttons are repeatedly going into one or another of the disfunctional states (+/- LEDs not lit, mute working but always blue, non-functioning buttons with fluttering low level mute button, etc.) I can remidy with battery removal and reboot, but the lights spaz out within 15 minutes. I'm convinced now the underlying cause of this problem is a hardware issue.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I'm having the exact same problem as wevowva. My buttons have quit working randomly here and there, but about a week or 2 ago, they have started doing exactly what wevowva's are. They work for 15 minutes after a shut down/battery removal but then the -/+ lights go out.

I uninstalled and never reinstalled the button software, and it didn't make a difference. Acts the same whether it's installed or not.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

My mother has a compaq presario 2030us laptop (I am typing on it, so I don't want to turn it upside down to look at the model number to find out exactly)
and it has quick launh buttons, and the quick launch buttons failed about 1 year after she had the laptop. don't know what's causing it.
the mute button I know lights up, but I don't remember about volume up and down. both of them work.

whenever standby or hibernate is attempted, such as when the laptop is closed, I get a messagebox saying that there was an error and quick launch buttons is preventing the system from going into hibernation.

tried the firmware update-battery-pull-ac-cord thing with no results.
the latest bios for this thing is F.23A and it had F.12, but the bios hasn't been updated since 2006.
Are there any known problems with Intervideo WinDVD or Inernet Explorer 8?

hibernate would be really nice to have.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

tried to uninstall quick launch buttons. resulted in hibernation or standby causing the messagebox "102/104 key keyboard driver is preventing the system from entering hibernation".
ugh. computer would be useless wihout a keyboard. may be software comflict, or something in the hw died, since it happened 1 year after system purchase.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I have the same problem, except I found some insances in which the LEDs appear to have less than minimum power. They glow violet for a few seconds before completely dying. Otherwise, it's identical to what you've described here. A technician had me update the Quicklaunch and audio drivers, and also suggested the aforementioned power interruption, but it seems that it no longer fixes the problem, not even temporarily. I even tried reinserting the ribbon cable to the bezel, which also fixed it for a while. The only other option the technician gave me was to take it in for repair.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I tried just nudging parts on the laptop, and discovered something new. On the dv6000, try pressing down hard on the [fn] key, if you notice lights changing in the quicklaunch bar, it might be and intermittent connection in the ribbon cable. You can try adjusting the cable by removing the bezel and the keyboard (all the screws in the battery compartment and a screw in the memory compartment). The cable's ends are between the [fn] and Windows keys and under the QuickPlay name on the bezel.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

Hiya, I'm having the same problem. I've got a HP Pavillion Dv3505ea.

All the buttons light up - (MediaSmart button, mute, volume bar, backwards, play/pause, forward, stop are in white, wireless is blue)

but when touched, nothing happens.

I always hibernate my computer and i have tried the hard reboot but it hasn't seemed to worked..
I've also updated the BIOS, re-installed the quick launch button driver and nothing happened.

This occured months ago, but has not bothered me very much, although i would like to be able to use the volume and mute buttons.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I have DV9727 which oddly enough came down with the same symptoms this week (Dec 24-30).

The resolution posted by Yama (Sep 23, 2007) worked for me:

- remove battery
- press and hold power for a few seconds
- remove ac power
(I don't know if it mattered but I left the battery out & power off for a few minutes)

All buttons are once again functional.

Good luck,

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I found a solution. the wireless mini-PCI card on my mother's laptop died (the one with the quick launch buttons problem). Sometimes I wondered if it was a software issue.

when I was forced to reinstall XP home using the System Recovery disc (and subsequently reinstall the drivers too), everything started working like normal.

She doesn't have all the software she had on it before, but maybe that's a good thing.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

It not clear to me that all of you have the identical problem. Here's my recommendation for the dv3505ea. Go here (assuming 32-bit Vista) and install the latest BIOS and the QuickLaunch driver and let us know the results:

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

dv9727 (Vista 32-bit): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=usтМй=en&product=3650852

6530b (Vista 32-bit): BIOS/QuickLauch/Button Board firmware!

The generic solution is to go here:

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/welcome.html#Support

select the "Download drivers and software (and firmware)" radio button, enter your product (e.g.: dv2715nr), click GO. On the next page, select your Operating System (OS). On the next page, minimally download/install the latest BIOS, HP QuickLaunch, and ButtonBoardFirmware (if pertinent).

Once your problem is resolved and you're confident your system is stable, do a System Restore then return and upgrade any drivers/programs/firmwares that are downlevel. If you're not completely comfortable with this step, skip it!!!!

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I applied the latedt quicklaunch buttons and have the latest bios. that was not the issue. only the OS reinstall fixed the problem.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

As I said I think that everyone in this thread may have a different problem and therefore a different solution (especially after several failed attempts to correct the problem). The important thing is to keep sharing symptoms and fixes, as you just did.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I found my fix on this site.
http://www.troublefixers.com/fixed-hp-laptop-touch-buttons-stop-working/
1) Basically you need to remove your battery and AC adapter from your laptop.
2) Then you press the laptop power button and hold for about 45 seconds to discharge the any residing power or static.
3) Then wait about 1-2 mins after that before replacing your battery and adapter.
4) Boot back up as normal and this is where mine started working again.
5) Do a victory dance!
Hope this helped some of you.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

My quick launch buttons on my dv-1451nr quit working about the same time I ungraded to Windows 7 which made me think it had something to do with the upgrade drivers. After literally hours of trying every thing short of reinstalling windows, two chat sessions with hp tech support with no luck at all I found this forum. Removing the battery and disconnected the ac power waiting 2 minutes then booting up worked. The quick launch buttons work again with the exception of the hp mediasmart quick launch button. Sense all the other buttons work now it seems it must be setting in the mediasmart smartmenu driver software but there are no preference settings I can find. I wondered if any one else had this problem.

Re: Quick Launch buttons issue - no longer work

I had an issue that was somewhat simila with the Sound icon on my HP Pavilion m9040n:

The mute oscillates on and off at over ten times per second. This makes the sound choppy (understandably, since it is really toggling off and on rapidly) but also slows the computer down. I had einstalled the OS after trying various other fixes (rollbacks on updates to the OS, etc.) I had noticed that touching any key on the keyboard makes it stop fluttering as long as the key is down. So I tested inteactions with the keyboard. As soon as the key is released, the flutter returns. So I shut the machine down and switched to a PS2 keyboard. All is now fine. So there appeas to be an incompatibility between the USB keyboard drivers and sound/speaker drivers.

You may want to check if changing to a PS2 keyboard fixes these other issues.
