About hobbyst license

Sailing on web I found some web sites that offers hobbyst license.
What are the limits of theese license?
I'm a professional vms operator, not a hobbyst so I think I can't use theese license.
Does somebody known about this?

Antoniov,

The only site I know of that is offering OpenVMS Hobbyist licenses is http://www.openvmshobbyist.com/

You can find there also the FAQ that explains what you can and cannot do with these licenses.

Hope this helps,

Greetz,

Kris

Re: About hobbyst license

Antoniov,

last time I heard about this it looked like you could not use the license to make money, e.g. by running your own accounting software on it.

If you use it on your own machine at home for your own enjoyment (e.g. playing Tetris) you should be safe.

Re: About hobbyst license

Hi,

I am running a couple of systems under the hobbyist program at home. This is a really great program and one of Johns lasting legacies.

You get not only the VMS license, but pretty much all layered products too. So it makes for an ideal freeware porting environment.

I also run all the network services at home on my VMS system (DNS, SMTP, NTP etc.).

Plus if there is a new version of OpenVMS or a new fancy tool (like the system healt check ;-) I usually give it at spin on my home system first. If it does not hurt there I start to test in the office...

You can use a system under this license to experiment with things and gain experience. I do not think you are supposed to use it for commercial SW development. But for this purpose other programs exist (Anybody knows the current name of the CSA?).

Re: About hobbyst license

Actually, it covers base license and quite a number of layered products, programming languages and some development tools - for NON_COMMERCIAL use only.
It's to be renewed yearly, and requires membership of a HP user group. If you want to spare money, associate membership of Encompassus (the former US DECUS) is sufficient. If you are a member, a CD holding VMS 7.3-1, TCPIP 5.3, DECNet and some tools can be obtained from www.montagar.com (it has a new name curerently but this one works as well)

FYI: Advanced Server is NOT included...

Re: About hobbyst license

HI,

for the Advanced server check Brads comments in the "VMS profitable" thread. It is an issue with sublicensing code.

You can get some products from other vendors under the hobbyist terms too (e.g. PL/I).

Re: About hobbyst license

Thank to all.
I suppose how use hobbist license; obviously they aren't usable inside my business but now I'm sure they are pretty legal.

Re: About hobbyst license

TO answer Martin's question - the current name of the CSA is the HP DSPP. For commertial software developers. There is a really good deal where for a couple of hundred pounds a year you can get licence paks for lots of compilers etc to use on any alphaservers you use for software development and testing.

Re: About hobbyst license

I think the DSPP programme will get you very good discounts on hardware bought for software development (like the DEC DemoDev programme).
