DECWindows for GY monitor

New - well, to me, anyway - Alphastation 200 4/233. I am just setting it up here at home, and the monitor is close - I see three overlapping images of the login screen. Technically I *could* log in, but it would be somewhat ugly.

As with the advice I got on the other Alphastation, I've been playing with DECW$SERVER_REFRESH_RATE of 75, 70, 65, and 60 - with no apparent change. Yes, I've been shutting down the DECW$ server process and restarting it after setting the refresh rate logical... any ideas?

Re: DECWindows for GY monitor

Hi,

often the monitors do have an on-screen menu that will give you information on the supported resolutions and refresh rates. Note the values.
Check the values supported by the graphics card in your AlphaStation. Find the intersection of the two sets. Set the parameters in decw$private_server_setup.com accordingly. It should work now (I know, famous last words :-)

In case it does not, please provide a few more details on the graphics card and the monitor and hopefully we will be able to figure it out in the forum.

Usually monitors have autosync property; check for OSD (On-line Setup Dispay) as hinted by Martin and set, if possible, autosync; otherwise set manually right values.

Re: DECWindows for GY monitor

Okay... the video card in question is a DEC ka706twlhy PCI video card. The FCC ID is a09-pbxga. (I'm using lower case letters here to make it easier to distinguish from numerals.) It has two large chips - a Digital 21030-aa chip, and a Bt Bt485akpj135 RAMDAC chip. This particular card has what appears to be an audio jack (not an RCA jack - it looks like a mini-stero jack) and four switches in a DIP package.

The monitor itself came from an old Compaq Presario 1525 system, and that's what is on the monitor: Compaq Presario 1525. According to http://h18000.www1.hp.com/athome/presariohelp/nl/monitors/monofea.html (which I don't read German, but I can kinda make out some of the info), it has a refresh rate of 60-75Hz. I'm guessing that at 1024 x 768, it should be 60Hz.

Re: DECWindows for GY monitor

Rebecca,

I have found the following list in my archives, but I don't seemt to have any manuals in electronic form - I'll see if I can find something on the bookshelves...

- PBXGA-AA PCI ZLXp-E1 8plane Graphics Accelerator (UNIX/VMS)
2 Mpixels, 1280 x 1024 x 256 colors, 72 Hz; needs Open3D
- PBXGA-AN PCI ZLXp-E1 8plane Graphics Accelerator (NT)
2 Mpixels, 1280 x 1024 x 256 colors, 72 Hz
- PBXGA-BA PCI ZLXp-E2 24plane Graphics Accelerator (UNIX/VMS)
2 Mpixels, 1280 x 1024 x 256 colors, 72 Hz
- PBXGA-BN PCI ZLXp-E2 24plane Graphics Accelerator (NT)
2 Mpixels, 1280 x 1024 x 256 colors, 72 Hz
- PBXGA-CA PCI ZLXp-E3 24plane Graphics Accelerator (UNIX/VMS)
25-bit Z-buffer, 4 Mpixels, 1280 x 1024 x 256 colors, 72 Hz
- PBXGA-CN PCI ZLXp-E3 24plane Graphics Accelerator (NT)
25-bit Z-buffer, 4 Mpixels, 1280 x 1024 x 256 colors, 72 Hz

Here are two URLs that seem to have an overview of the switches:
http://www.antinode.org/dec/pbxga_settings.html
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/wizard/wiz_6965.html

The jack seems to be for a stereo viewer, not for audio.

While I understand a little bit of German, the language on this page looks like Dutch to me - the /nl/ within the URL suggests this, too.

Re: DECWindows for GY monitor

Thanks, Uwe, that was perfect - the video card is back in Brigid, and the display looks even better than before! Now to go finish setting things up. I have intentions for both my Alphastation 200's to run the SETI @ Home program, as well as allowing me to do some programming and remote logins.

These are *awesome* systems!

I am relieved, because I now don't have to snoop through my bookshelves ;-)
