eSMTP - VMS 7.3-2 - HP TCP/IP release 5.4
Hello,
I am new here so I may be posting the following question in the wrong category.
I am a PC specialist. I have been iformed by my VMS collegues that we're running the above OS version with the above TCP/IP stack.
The question is: Can we use any sort of an e-SMTP (with authentication) client? If so, what the syntax?
Thank you much,
-Costas

I think that when you say "with
authentication", the answer is no, but you
might get better answers faster in the VMS
forum than here in the HP-UX forum.
Actual output from "TCPIP SHOW VERSION" is
always better than your interpretation of it.

Re: eSMTP - VMS 7.3-2 - HP TCP/IP release 5.4
The HP TCP/IP Services package does not yet support ESMTP (SMTP Authentication), either as a MAIL client or as a MAIL server.
You might review the available third-party IP stacks for OpenVMS as an option. Process Software has well-regarded IP stacks available, and the PMDF server.
Stalker ComminGate might be another approach, or Quintara Secure Server.
OS X Server is rumored to be including a full Exchange-like server in its next release (and the Calender Server source code is available at Mac OS Forge)(the present version supports ESMTP). Porting over the Mac OS Forge code for the Calendar Server onto OpenVMS might well be interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_Calendar_Server This would be a complete replacement for the TCP/IP Services SMTP Server.
An ESMTP client for OpenVMS likely would not be that difficult for HoffmanLabs to code up; it's a client transport image, just like the existing SMTP client image. This assuming the transport image doesn't already exist somewhere. (But I haven't seen it.)
