firmware update for PWS433au alpha personal workstation

hello,

1. trying to boot a DEC PWS433au Miata MX5 (EV56) with openvms 8.3 hobbyist CD, I get the following error on SRM console:

%sysboot-f-firmrev, firmware rev. 6.6. is below the absolute minimum of 6.8, please update... to 6.9, which can be found on firmware CD labeled alpha systems firmware update 6.8

I couldn't find any such CD or iso image on the web.. any suggestions where to get it?

2. is the PCI graphics ATI rage pro 215GP (rev5c) support by openvms?

Appreciate your help. thanks!

The second company I worked for paid ┬г┬г┬г┬г┬г┬г to Compaq for a support contract, so we were on the consolidated distribution list, and got regular updates of the firmware, SPL, docs &etc. CDs.

I don't believe that unless you had a support contract (at or above a certain level) that you got the CDs, unless you paid separately for them (if that was even possible).

There might be issues with making ISOs available on the web (if the CDs were even ISO format;  certainly, original VAX CDs weren't).

I've had a look at the pile of CDs I have here, and there are no firmware CDs in amongst them;  I know I have some, so they must be at home somewhere, but it will be weeks before I next go home.

I'm not sure if there is a recent enough firmware CD to provide what you want.

If I have it, (and it's a big IF...) you're certainly welcome to borrow it - if you send me a private message, letting me know generally where you are based (UK? EMEA?  USA) I can determine whether or not I could drop it off in person, or would need to post it.

Re: firmware update for PWS433au alpha personal workstation

It looks to me like this firmware is still available the "old" wa, via anonymous FTP:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/retired_platforms/workstations/digital_pers_wrksta/

Thanks, David! Yes, right, thank you! Your link points to the individual fw-update files for PWS; they require to make a bootable floppy disk. Eventhough my PWS has a floppy drive (which hopefully still works) I need to find a 3.5" floppy disk...

I wonder if this iso contains also the FW for the PWS, in which case it'd be simpler to just burn a CD-R instead of trying the floppy disk way, which I consider risky:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/iso_images/
file V69.iso

Re: firmware update for PWS433au alpha personal workstation

p.s. I checked

V69.iso

 it doesn't contain any FW for older workstations :(

the good news is, i found a 3.5" floppy disk and will report back soon if the fw-update worked.

   I found an "Alpha Systems Firmware Update V6.5" CD ("June 2003")
lying around here.  It says:

      2  Important Changes on Firmware CD

      Starting with the V6.1 Alpha Systems Firmware Update CD, files for
      systems that have not had a new firmware release for at least
      three years have been dropped from the CD. [...]

"Digital Personal Workstation" is among the "no longer included" models
listed.  (The Internet sources suggested in the Release Notes Overview,
like ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/firmware may not be as useful as
what you've already found.)

   I also found a V5.1 CD ("February 1998") which seems to include
DIGITALPW_V6_7.EXE (and .SYS).

                    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++          Jan 17, 1997
                    + DIGITAL Personal Workstations  +
                    +         README-First !!!       +
                    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

        1. Latest Firmware Update Revisions

             The latest Firmware Update Bootfile "DIGITALPW_V6_7.EXE" on the
             Alpha Firmware CD V5.1,  contains the SRM Console V6.7, which
             has the following components (* = CHANGED since last release) :

                        APU  6.7 *
                        SRM  6.7 *
                  AlphaBIOS  5.64 *
                       SROM  5.85 *  (See note below in section 3)
                 BIOS (SRM)  1.15a
                 BIOS (ARC)  2.02
                VMS PALcode  1.21-10
                OSF PALcode  1.18-10

  So, my guess would be that the V5.7 CD might have a decent
chance of having the latest/last PWS firmware.

2. is the PCI graphics ATI rage pro 215GP (rev5c) support by openvms?

   All the "ATI" I see in SYS$SYSTEM:SYS$CONFIG.DAT are these:

device = "ATI Mach32"        id = 0x41581002
device = "ATI Mach64-GX"     id = 0x47581002
device = "ATI Mach64-CX"     id = 0x43581002
device = "ATI Mach64-CT"     id = 0x43541002
device = "ATI Radeon 7500"   id = 0x51571002
device = "ATI Radeon 7000"   id = 0x51591002

   If your PCI vendor/device data don't match any of these, then I'd
guess no.

   "remote" comes in many flavors.  (Serial port, DECnet, LAT, rlogin,
SSH, Telnet, ...)

Re: firmware update for PWS433au alpha personal workstation

what happened? the post I wrote an hour ago and which you replied to disappeared!

yes the other decw$* files are there but not decw$startup.com

I doubt there is a suitable fw cd for pws. SRM 6.7 is not enough for vms 8.3, see quote from the first post in this thread:

%sysboot-f-firmrev, firmware rev. 6.6. is below the absolute minimum of 6.8 ...

   Russian hackers?  Lame forum software?  It's a mystery.  (I edit my
postings on my VMS system, and copy+paste them into the forum editor.
Trust no one, I always say.)

   Which " the other decw$* files"?  DECwindows and Motif are different.
What does yours say?:

   Yes, but that was from an "Alpha Firmware CD V5.1".  The version of
the CD and the version of the firmware/software on the CD may differ.

Hi Steven

thanks, you are right! I downloaded and checked the content, you are right it contains digitalpw_v72_1.exe etc.

By the way, the PWSs were delivered with IDE cd-rom (toshiba) drives. Since my cd-rom drive was mechanically broken when I got it, I replaced it with an IDE cd-r/w (4x4x32) drive since I didn't have any IDE cd-rom drive available.

When I tried to boot the vms 8.3 installation ec axpvms  from dqa0 (cd-r/w drive), I got an error that the block 0 is not a valid boot block. I don't know if this error was due to using an cd-r/w instead of cd-rom drive.

Since I found contracdictory info about the SRM console being able to boot from IDE cd-rom or not (sorry I lost the link), I replaced the IDE cd-r/w with a SCSI cd-rom [teac] drive, which booted the vms install CD which lead to the firmware upgrade requirement.

Re: firmware update for PWS433au alpha personal workstation

Hello, I'm reposting a revised version of my lost post from last Saturday:

Hi Steven,

After firmware upgrade openvms 8.3 now boots on pws433au.

Since I had problems booting from cd-rom (this was before I replaced the ide cd-r/w drive by a scsi cd-rom drive), for the fw-upgrade I prepared a floppy for the srm, arc, srom update and a 2nd one for the pci-controller update.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/retired_platforms/workstations/digital_pers_wrksta/digitalpw_v72_fw_relnote.pdf shows how to do this for Windows NT, Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS, and DOS/Windows Users.

The DOS/Windows ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/other/utility/makeboot.exe utility (which is a combination of mkboot.c of rawrite.c by Mark Becker and mkbootfirm.c by Kevin Mocklin (DEC)) is a 16 bit program and doesn't run in win [win10pro64] (which runs in virtualbox under linux on my pc), because it is not compatible with 64 bit win. Since I don't have WNT, Tru64 nor openvms, I created a floppy disk image ($ head -c 1474560 /dev/zero > myimage.vfd), formatted it under win (can also be done with linux $ fdisk myimage.vfd (n ...(default) t ... (type) 6 (FAT16); $ mkfs.fat myimage.vfd), and then used dosbox under linux to mount the FD image with imgmount.
Note, that the FD image must be formatted otherwise it won't mount and there is no format program in dosbox.
Then I copied the firmware ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/retired_platforms/workstations/digital_pers_wrksta/digitalpw_v72_1.exe (renamed to fwupdate.exe) and mkboot.exe to ~/alphafw

$ dosbox

Z:\> imgmount a -t floppy myimage.vfd
Drive a is mounted as myimage.vfd

Z:\> mount c ~/alphafw

Z:\> c:

C:\> makeboot fwupdate.exe

mkboot V1.1: create a bootable floppy
Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and press andy key :
Number of sectors per track for this disk is 18
Writing image to drive A: Press ^C to abord.
Track: 68 Head: 0 Sector: 13
Done.
C:\>

Now I copied myimage.vfd via scp via LAN to the pws433au (alpha) running an old installation of debian linux for alpha* on dka0 (/dev/sda1). [when I got the pws, debian was installed, though it didn't boot since the bios battery was empty which reset it to pws433a. I replaced the battery and changed the bios settings to openvms/SRM console.]

I also copied the openvms 8.3 system disk image from my previous workstation (dec3000) to debian on alpha ($ scp disk00.img root@192.168.178.30:~) and then on debian on alpha to the 2nd scsi disk dka100 ($dd if=disk00.img of=/dev/sdb bs=10M). that the sizes differ, doesn't matter for now, since dka100 is much bigger than my old system disk.

Under debian on alpha I copied the myimage.vfd to a physical floppy with ($fdformat /dev/fd0; dd if=myimage.vfd /dev/fd0; cmp /dev/fd0 myfwupd.vfd) and it turned out that only one of my last 10 spare floppy disks I found in the basement was a good one. I rebooted via SRM from DVA0 and successfully flashed SRM, ARC/AlphaBIOS, and SROM.

Then I did a power cycle and using the procedure shown above I prepared the pci-controller firmware update floppy using
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/retired_platforms/workstations/digital_pers_wrksta/digitalpw_pci_v7_2.exe
It booted, read the content of the floppy, and then directly rebooted into Debian.
During ($shutdown now -h) the firmware utility "UPD>" came up with the blue screen, looking for fw-update (options) on a ods-2(?) device, which I didn't know what to do about since I had not burned any CD and exited.

By the way, what would be the pci controller name by the way on pws433au: dfxaa_fw, KZPSAA12, kzpsa_fw (these are listed in ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/alphaserver/firmware/retired_platforms/workstations/digital_pers_wrksta/digitalpwfw.sys ).

Back in SRM I set the boot_osflags to 0,0 and booted dka100 and my system disk openvms 8.3 тАФafter asking for date/timeтАФ booted without error (at least as far as I saw, since the display scrolled fast and I've not yet inspected the boot log file.)

Sadly X (@decw$startup) doesn't start since my ATI graphics card is not supported by openvms. now I got stuck with $edit/teco! :) I'll try to find a S3 Trio32/64.

Cheers and thanks to Alfred (ccac) and mihi42 for their help.

*) Debian supports my ATI rage pro 215GP (rev5c) graphics card. Debian dropped support for alpha since many years. If you want to follow my steps and need a bootable linux on alpha, note, that alpha is still actively supported by gentoo linux: https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/, though the last gentoo alpha liveCD & install http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/Gentoo/experimental/alpha/livecd/ http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/distfiles.gentoo.org/experimental/alpha/livecd/ http://gentoo.osuosl.org/experimental/alpha/livecd/ is from 2006; it booted into 'aboot' with my scsi cd-rom drive; with aboot parameter 0 it continued boot but lost the access to cd-rom/root; maybe it was made to boot from ide cd-rom drive. this is another topic.

Re: firmware update for PWS433au alpha personal workstation

Hi,

XWindows (dec axpvms dwmotif) works now after installing a S3 Trio64V+ 86C765 1MB PCI VGA-card in the pws433au.

got a screen shot, playing Tetris: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SucQFkN2SniUbf8W8 from this album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/a3fQQKCZMhJQ9vsq5

as we know from above, V57.ISO contains the latest firmware update for PWS. I did the update of SRM console firmware V7.2 via floppy disk since I had cd-rom boot problems.

I now have both, an IDE and a SCSI cd-rom drive installed, in SRM they appear as DQA1 and DKA300, and I wanted to also update the PCI firmware.

I burned V57.ISO on a 700MB cd-r media and booted it. According to digitalpw_v72_fw_relnote.pdf as Bootfile I entered [digitalpw]digitalpw_pci_v7_2.exe
The system then restarts and loads the LFU Loadable firmware update utility.

Hit <return> to use the default filename (digitalpwfw.txt) : dqa1
Copying digitalpwfw.txt from dqa1. . .

and then it hangs forever. Then I tried to boot the V57 CD from DKA300; it hangs at the same point, see https://photos.app.goo.gl/xVqemucfrUw5tTUr9

The options list file digitalpwfw.txt contains these 4 relevant lines:

DFXAA320
dfxaa_fw
KZPSAA12
kzpsa_fw
!

and the explanation, quote "The first line will contain the directory and filename as it appears on the update media, without the extension and in upper case. The following line will contain the name of the file to which the image will be copied on the console's file system."

So LFU is supposed to copy
[OPTIONS]DFXAA320.SYS from dqa1 to dfxaa_fw
[OPTIONS]KZPSAA12.SYS from dqa1 to kzpsa_fw

but doesn't specify a source directory name. I assume [OPTIONS] is the default source directory and the destination is ramdisk.
Any ideas why the update utility hangs here?

Thanks!
