How to add a disk to a Raidset in a HSG80

I would like to know (if possible) how to add a new physical disk to an existing Raidset. I have looked through the manual but i can't find the command.

Thanks

I guess you mean raid-5. It's not possible. You have to backup the data, re-create the raid set and restore the data.

I assume you need more disk space; why not replacing exiting disks by bigger ones; and after you have done that for all of them in the raid set; tell the controller;
You need at lease VMS 7.3-2 to work reporararly with different size disks

That will not work. You can use bigger disks but the capacity used on that disk will stay the same. There is no way to tell the controller to use the whole disk of all disks.

What has the VMS version to do with it ? Its HSG80.

Re: How to add a disk to a Raidset in a HSG80

Luis,

If I understand your question correctly, it is not directly possible to add a disk to a RAID set (as opposed to replacing a failed volume, which is supported). Adding a disk would require reformatting the contents of all of the volumes, which is a bit of a task.

However, you can use the Host Based Volume Shadowing support to transparently migrate data storage from a RAID set of one size to a differently sized and/or configured storage set. On the same storage controller or a different storage controller.

I presented "Migrating OpenVMS Storage Environments without Interruption/Disruption" about these techniques at the 2005 HP Technology Forum in Orlando, Florida. The slides from that session are available from my www site at http://www.rlgsc.com/hptechnologyforum/2005/1146.html

And that's where 7.3-2 comes in.

Wim,

To expand the volumes, you need at least 7.3-2. To merely reconfigure the RAID, or migrate to a different configuration, earlier versions should work, subject to some limitations.
