How would you like me to use this forum?

Dear Folks,

As many of you know I send mail on a regular basis. I see that I can add files in this forum if less than 1MB, which I can do, but how would you like me to use this forum or would you prefer that I not particpate at all. Just let me know.

Warm Regards,
Sue

Hi there Sue, fancy meeting you here!

Many readers here will indeed get mail from you already.

But I suspect that specifically in this forum many more have never heard from you.

Please REPLY here with a quick overview as to who you are and how you can help our OpenVMS users. Maybe add to that a pointer to a page on teh OpenVMS website.
[be sure to hit 'reply', not 'new']

Regards,
Hein.

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Hello Sue,
I'm very happy to meet you in this forum!
I known you wish promote Vms so if you look into Vms forum daily you can keep live contact with us.
Most questions have technical contents but some threads may be interesting for you.
For example Ian has opened this thread http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=68036
I think here you can open a new thread every new edition of VTJ (Vms Technical Journal).

Sue, you are welcome anywhere. We are all VMS fans here :-) I think you reading the threads especially the non-technical ones and passing the discussion to the relevent managers within hp and getting their responses back here.

Hi Sue!
Glad to see you in this forum. I have always had a great respect for the things you do to help.

Maybe create a perpetual thread topic such as OpenVMS Pearls?

Sue,

WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME.
Nice to have you around as well. I'm sure you'll find enough interesting material in this forum. Since at leat the majority of it's members is dedidated to VMS you'll have a kind of 'shortcut' to the user community, IMHO one of the best.
If you would like to participate - why not? Both the user community and HP would win.
Although quite some of us are on a mailing list, I think that any publication could be posted here as well to reach others - and, if CEO/CIO level related, in some other forum (business continuity, for instance) to reach company management.

Welcome Sue!

What can I add to what the others wrote but to second them wholeheartedly?

And mind Willem's hint: managerial stuff could hopefully have a positiv impact in "Business Continuity" as well.

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Hello Sue,

the others around here already have used up uppercase and since the board here does not support proper VT escape codes I can not put the Welcome in bold, blinking as you deserve it :-)

Most of the time the discussions here are pretty technical, so I am not sure a general cross posting of all the Pearls would be a good idea, but there are certainly many that the crowd around here will be interested to hear about.

And I am sure we would all appreciate if you find time to join the bar ITRC meeting at the bootcamp.

All the best,

Martin

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

I think the Pearls, as a single topic, would be a great idea. Remember that this board is searchable -- once Sue sends out a Pearl, it may or may not ever be found again...

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Hello Stan,

good idea. I'd like to propose one refinement. Make one thread per month posting (and discussing ;-) public Pearls. If you try to lump them indefinitly together the thread would become humongous pretty soon.

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Well then Kjell,
I'm glad I got your post first :-)

Susan Skonetski, known to most as "Sue", is kind of the "Mother Goose" for all VMS ambassadors.
She is about 250% of what one person can be in promoting VMS, both inside and outside HP, despite the well-known VMS-advertising attidude within HP. Hardly any terrier around worldwide that could hang to any subject as much as Sue hangs into VMS promotion.
Besides that, she is a wonderfull woman to talk to, even more so if time for visiting a bar can be found.

(and no Sue, I am NOT flattering or exagarating, although you probably will say so. Everyone else is there to testify).

Depending what you expect. ken Farmer (www.openvms.org) keeps them as well. But combined with "our" comments, storinge them here too would be a good idea (and deeplink to management forums where applicable)

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Ken Farmer does a great job. But searching for OpenVMS information starting at "www.hp.com" won't get you to them -- putting them here gets them into HP's search engine (I hope!).

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Stanley,

Ken keeps them together, at least, his sites features a SEARCH to get all he has stored.
although - I just checked and it will only show the ones until 2004. (none of this year). I don't know why (I'll ask on his site)

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

The issue is that, starting at > HP.COM <, you won't find them. HP customers and prospects will naturally start at HP.COM.

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

Hi,

definitly an improvement of the search engine for the forums (inbefore it was next to useless really). As for Altavista, this does not belong to hp anymore, so maybe they should partner with Google ;-) I anyhow often do a

site:hp.com search in Google rather than using hp's engine.

Hi Sue and welcome here!

Speaking of "Google"ing, I thought these forums were a "members only" thing. A co-worker (who has too much free time) typed my name into Google, and the first hit was my recent MSCP Performance thread. I guess you only have to sign up to post? Now I have to be careful what I say _everywhere_!

Re: How would you like me to use this forum?

I'm a rank neophyte, actually barely familiar with VMS. However, I've been asked to find some guidelines or standards about how to securely implement VMS on ALpha servers. Based on the comments I've seen in the thread, you are clearly one of the cogniscenti in the area. Can you point me to any docs or material on this subject?

Thanks,
Jim

Sure. Just go to:

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/72final/6346/6346pro.html

It's OpenVMS Security Guide. Enjoy!
