i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

Hi,

I am currently running OpenVMS 8.2 i64 on an Integrity server and I would like to know where I can look for the latest OS patches.

Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

I strongly recommend to just go forward to OpenVMS 8.3 vs applying patches to 8.2

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

There may be some fancy ITRC method, but I
normally get my patch kits from:

ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/

Whereunder yours would be seem to be in:

ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/i64/V8.2/

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

The following text is from the OpenVMS FAQ. On re-reading this text, I'll correct the email notifications -- one of the better ways now available is via the OpenVMS.Org ECO notification list and not via the ITRC list cited in the text below. There's also a text file containing a master listing of ECOs present in each of the platform- and version-specific directories. (The fixes to this text will be in the next edition of the FAQ.)

5.17 How can I acquire OpenVMS patches, fixes, and ECOs?

You can acquire and download kits containing OpenVMS fixes (ECOs) for various releases, as well as related support information, via the ITRC support center:

o http://www.itrc.hp.com/

o ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/

Some systems with Internet firewalls may/will have to use passive mode FTP to access the above sites.

Assuming recent/current versions of the TCP/IP Services package, the DCL FTP command necessary is:

$ DIRECTORY/FTP/ANONYMOUS/PASSIVE ftp.itrc.hp.com::

You can subscribe to an email notification list at the ITRC site.

For a list of OpenVMS ECO kits recently released, you can use:

o http://Eisner.DECUS.org/
conferences/OpenVMS-patches_new_1.HTML

Examples and ECO kit installation instructions are included in the cover letter. For ECO kit email notifications, lists of available ECO kits, cover letters and other associated documentation, look in:

o http://www.itrc.hp.com/

o ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/

For additional information, please see Section 5.17.

I too recommend getting off of OpenVMS I64 V8.2, and upgrading onto either V8.2-1 or V8.3; I concur with Hein here.

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

See
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/i64/V8.2/I64_V82I_MASTER_ECO_LIST.txt

which contains a list of the current patches. The patches themselves can be found in the same directory.

VMS I64 V8.2 is a couple of years old now. V8.2-1 and now V8.3 have been released and each is better (more functionality, faster) than the previous one.

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

Hein & Hoff,

You both amek perfect sense. Here's what I am planning on doing:

1. Patch my current 8.2 version
2. Upgrade to 8.2-1
3. Upgrade from 8.2-1 to 8.3
4. Update patches for the 8.3 if any.

What do you guys think?? Would I be able to get these updates & patches from the mentioned sites?

Many thanks!!

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

Is there a zip file has all the files rolled into one or I have to download one file at a time??

Thanks,

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

I se no reason at all to patch first and then upgrade.

Here is what the docunentation writes:

"HP OpenVMS Version 8.3 Upgrade and Installation Manual "
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/83final/ba322_90045/index.html
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/83final/ba322_90045/ch04s03.html#vms-upgrade-paths

"You can upgrade directly to OpenVMS Alpha Version 8.3 from only the following versions of OpenVMS Alpha:

Version 8.2
Version 7.3-2"

No word on any patches or intermediate versions being required.

Hein.

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

Hein,

Where can I go to download version 8.3 i64 from? Do I need to contact HP for the media kit to perform the upgrade?

Thanks much!

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

There's a password-protected FTP download site that is available to HP contract support customers, but most everybody else gets to order the DVD kit.

If you have a software contract, you can generally request the kit (pull) via your support contract contact, or you can gain access to the FTP download site for the kit.

There's also now no periodic distro product offering available from HP; there is no ConDist-style product subscription.

BA322AA HP OpenVMS I64 FOE Media
BA323AA HP OpenVMS I64 EOE Media
BA324AA HP OpenVMS I64 MCOE Media

Here are the various part number modifiers that can be of interest here:

#A35 HP OpenVMS I84 V8.3
#A24 HP OpenVMS I64 V8.2-1
#AJR OE Media Kit on DVD

So you'll probably want BA322AA #A35 #AJR for the DVD media kit. (And you'll want to confirm that part before you order it!)

V8.2-1 is included in the list, but only if you want to end up on V8.2-1, will you need that. Nor will you need to apply V8.2 ECOs for an V8.2 to V8.3 upgrade, either; as Hein had indicated.

You'll also need a new software version license (for each core present) from the following (cryptic) list, and probably with the #A35 suffix. (This new license is also officially part of OpenVMS Alpha version upgrades, too.)

BA452AC HP VMS I64 FOE PCL LTU Max2 Proc w/o Sys

BA338AC HP VMS I64 FOE PCL LTU Max4 Proc w/o Sys

BA326AC HP VMS I64 FOE PCL LTU Unltd Proc w/o Sys

BA450AC HP VMS I64 EOE PCL LTU Max2 Proc w/o Sys

BA398AC HP VMS I64 EOE PCL LTU Max4 Proc w/o Sys

BA330AC HP VMS I64 EOE PCL LTU Unltd Proc w/o Sys

BA454AC HP VMS I64 MCOE PCL LTU Max2 Proc w/o Sys

BA400AC HP VMS I64 MCOE PCL LTU Max4 Proc w/o Sys

BA331AC HP VMS I64 MCOE PCL LTU Unltd Proc w/o Sys

If you want to upgrade from one operating environment to another, there are upgrade licenses:

BA453ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS FOE 2 Processor

BA325ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS FOE 4 Processor

BA326ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS FOE Unlimited

BA451ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS EOE 2 Processor

BA397ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS EOE 4 Processor

BA327ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS EOE Unlimited

BA455ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS MCOE 2 Processor

BA399ACN#130 HP LTU Upgr credit from VMS MCOE 4 Processor

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

Hi Hoff,

We do have contract with HP, therefore, I will try pull it down from there. Otherwise, I will order the media kit from our vendor.

Where you have the link to the FTP site?

Thanks so much!!

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

I do not immediately recall the path to the OpenVMS I64 download files, but I believe it's around here somewhere; somewhere here amid the ITRC site. Somewhere. Mayhap the Software Update Manager (SUM) stuff?

Here is the ITRC SUM link:

http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/sum/home.do

At least at one time, there was a second and different FTP site for the OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX downloads. That was elsewhere. (I'd not be surprised to learn the sites were eventually to be be consolidated.)

The nice folks at the HP support center will very likely know the direct and official path here at ITRC or over at the other site, and should also be able to provide you with the requisite username and password.

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

My personal preference and recommendation?

I would load the TZ patch. Even if I were manually adjusting the time for the switch-over between standard and daylight saving time. I have loaded TZ, and will likely be loading the Canadian-Rules ECO even though the servers involved are not located in Canada, [insert xdelta prompt here].

The timezone definitions handle more than just the switch-over itself. Applications using various of the time-related queries will be off by an hour for part of the year, and I'd want to investigate and test for the "off by an hour" buglet case that has cropped up often enough to be featured in the FAQ. This case has some applications showing one time, and other applications showing a different time. Usually differing by an hour; by the local value for the DST switch-over.

The US has been blissfully unaware of the frequency of TZ changes world-wide. These changes happen with regularity. OpenVMS Engineering has traditionally pulled down a new set of TZ rules for each new OpenVMS release.

Though I have no inside information, it would not surprise me to see additional changes to the US TZ rules. Australia has seen two or three DST changes over the past ten years. The last round of (major) US DST-related changes lasted from Carter through Reagan, IIRC. But I digress.

I would apply the TZ ECO. Even with manual switch-over performed locally using SYS$MANAGER:DAYLIGHT_SAVINGS.COM, or otherwise.

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

great. I will pull down the patch and applied to my VMS servers.

What version of VMS are you running? I am running version 7.3-2 on an ES45 - Would you have the exact patch name?

Thank you!

Re: i64 OpenVMS 8.2 patches

Want help managing this OpenVMS system, or wish a support backstop? (I'm inferring (possibly incorrectly) that you're not entirely comfortable with OpenVMS.) Here in ITRC, I and the other folks can only answer the questions you ask -- there may well be other ECOs that need to be applied here. Contacting HP Services or another support organization can help work through the list of ECOs that your specific site needs.

As for your most recent question, the ECO for OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-2 is the current VMS732_TZ kit, or its replacement. Right now, it looks to be VMS732_TZ-V0300, but that could and almost certainly will change. This TZ ECO will likely get rolled into the next UPDATE kit, for instance. As for prerequisite ECO kits, you'll need the PCSI and UPDATE ECO kits, if you don't already have those loaded.

ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/alpha/V7.3-2/VMS732_TZ-V0300.ZIPEXE
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/alpha/V7.3-2/VMS732_TZ-V0300.txt

The minimal ECO kit you need is listed here:
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/dst.html

For Java, read here:
http://h18012.www1.hp.com/java/alpha/DST-US.html

The ECOs are accessible in the following FTP area -- the Master Listing of ECOs -- the Master Listing is a text file you can download for each release, and can see which ECOs are considered mandatory for that release by the nice folks at HP -- is also present in the release directory:
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/

FWIW, with a couple of COPY/FTP commands, you can pull over the entire directory of FTP kits and then pull over the entire selection of text files. And work with it all locally. (The ITRC FTP server is seemingly always rather slow.)
