Re: jpe is on podium

Oh, I'm a bit slow this morning :-(

Now I understand: Jan's climbed to #3 in the list.

Congratulations!

Isn't that funny?

Re: jpe is on podium

fine piece of ASCII art Uwe :-)

I also wondered which podium.

Every one of Jan's answers is worth reading. If you compare this place to comp.os.vms the signal to noise ratio is so much higher. See you in Nashua (just under 4 weeks to go now).

I didn't dare to put a colorful .PPT here ;-)

Sorry, won't be in Nashua, it slightly collides with the ENSA in DK and I have already been in London, UK and CXO this year. It's time to do some real work ;-)

Re: jpe is on podium

Jan,

Da's het beter werk!

Just wondering: Since the most experienced system managers seem to have time left to help the innocent (in fact no wonder with VMS systems ;-), why did some of them (like Jan) added their comments so late....

Shhh. Don't tell anybody, but the spare time can be used for other projects like writing programs to automate tasks to even get more free time ;-) In a previous life I was able to write a utility to assist us in maintaining databases.

occationally work does interfere with answering questions here :-)

I spend my spare time learning about VMS (time spent here included) and occationaly writing software (at home generally) - see

Re: jpe is on podium

Uwe,

do you not read your profssional press, or is it only in the Netherlands that those papers are always complaining that System Managers do not have ANY time to do ANYTHING but installing new patches and new spamfilters and repairing new security holes??

Why, we are at the moment also planning to install some patches. Pwoei, so soon again, previous was October some!

And these mainly because of the SAN monitoring agent, which is wanted, but we banned the last version for generating 10 processes per second. And the new version requires some new patches.

But, like you, we do automate most of our work. That way we manage to find some time to automate more of our work, and for ITRC (well, except what I do at evenings & weekends, those generate sometimes some irritations with the rest of the family).

And, maybe, some old life shining through: I DO still hold a teacher's degree.

Proost.

Have one on me.

Re: jpe is on podium

The reason why I'm not always at ITRC is because I also do the contracts with HP. About 200 pages are windows systems ugh and the rest are VMS systems and network components. Even I do a lot of meetings with costumers and suppliers. O, yes I do also some systemmanagement of OpenVMS (two fingers ...).
So sorry I cant do more, but I do like the persons on ITRC.
Sorry Willem, Uwe etc. I'm not always as fast as (I find) I need to.

But yes, it's nice to see a Dutch on the top 3 ......

Re: jpe is on podium

Until I worked on vms I had time to read vms forum.
Since January I work outside my office in a new financial project based on SAP and windows 2k3 (sigh).
No vms, no time :-(

Jan,
my last work day as a full-time OpenVMS system manager was 30-SEP-1996 and I have not met many of this dying species during recent years.

Re: jpe is on podium

Jan,

Congradulations!!! And - Thank you. I very much appreciate your valued input. Your responses are always comprehensive, yet concise. You deserve every point.

But look out, I only have ~2800 points to catch you. I`ve been a VMS System`s Manager since 1-Jun-1984. But for the last ten years, I`ve been busy fighting Microsoft Windows fires, while our OpenVMS system just runs quietly in the background.

But, saddly, we too are phasing out good `ole OpenVMS. :( But I`m going to stay active here as time permits. I plan on obtaining a hobbiest`s license and run VMS on a MicroVAX and an Alpha at home. Should be fun.

Enjoy the podium while you can,
