KVM support on Integrity/open vms

is there any way to use a KVM on Integrity servers running open VMS?
HP says no such beast (KVM) exists. Seems like a missing link for such a high price rack mount server.

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

Russ,

welcome to the OpenVMS ITRC forum.

You could manage an OpenVMS I64 system running on an Integrity Server using the Management Processor (MP), which offers both a serial and TELNET interface.

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

thank you for quick response! Seems the dedicated mouse and keyboard USP ports are a bit of a problem. Server must see devices or will not boot.

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

Russ,

OpenVMS I64 does not support using a VGA graphics device as a console output device for booting. It also does not support using a USB keyboard for booting.

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

Russ,

you need to configure the appropriate Console Input, Console Output and Console Error devices in EFI:

For OpenVMS, you need to use either the 'System Serial Port' or the 'MP Console' entries.

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

We have our console and VGA monitor working. We had hoped to put the Itaniums (that are in a rack) with the other servers on a KVM. This getsinto mixing Wintel machines with Itaniums running VMS. Also PS2 outputs with USB outputs. This is the issue that no one seems to have an answer to.

We had to purchase separate monitors and make direct connections to Itaniums for monitor, keyboard, and mouse external to the rack to solve our problem.

Just wondered if anyone else tried to use a KVM on mixed platform machines.

thank you again for your help

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

I use a Raritan CompuSwitch KVM, switching between a Digital Personal Workstation running VMS 7.3-2, Red Hat Linux, Windows (!), and a rx2600 running VMS 8.2-1.

I'm using a Belkin F5u199e PS2 to USB converter for the Itanium box. This only works for a US keyboard, according to an email I received privately from the USB guru.

During the V8.2 Field Test, I discovered this issue. My understanding that the fixed mouse driver is in V8.2 (or maybe V8.2-1).

This was in comp.os.vms on August 30, 2004.

I'm sorry, but are you saying that this set-up is working you or you are still experiencing some issues?

Re: KVM support on Integrity/open vms

It worked perfectly with V8.2-1, and works great with F8.3 Field Test. Haven't installed the released V8.3, but I expect it will.
