Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
==>>I got a new HP Rx2600 integrity server recently. When I connected this to a console it is asking for username and password. But I don't have that info. Can anyone help me out how to break the password and also pls let me know what is the default username/password for Open VMS machines?
==> Why does this machine does not support VGA monitors as standard output device even after changing the option(to PCI) in console boot configuration option menu? I am getting the following error...
"Error - canout device path is not a UART device
Warning - Select Console device path from boot manager menu"
Thanks,
hem

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
I can get if you lost console password of vms password. Are you able to see CM (Command Menu)?
About default username of VMS, if you means the first administrator created on system that's SYSTEM; there is no any default for password.
AFAIK, rx series support graphical interface without disable character text console.
About path UART, use SA command in CM menu.

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
Integrety <> Alpha. No "console" like SRM....
If your model came with remote management unit, you need to login at that one. Unless you haven't booted VMS, that may need to be the username/password to be entered first.
But this device allows VGA.
So the question here is: What level?
For the management consoe, I don't recall. It might be it has a default user/password.
VMS has NO standard username/password. An account that is available on any VMS box is SYSTEM but there is no such thing like a default password. The person that installed VMS determines the password for SYSTEM to login. Otherwise, you are forced to bypass SYSUAF at startup - and will be allowed access at the console.
UART = Serial IO port (AKA COM port). As said, the remote management unit has VGA on board, so either you haven't the right configuration, or are connected to the wrong hardware. Or you are connecting to another manager that happens to know just serial.

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
On new systems, there are two default usernames, Oper and Admin. The firmware tells you the password for these just before it prompts you for username and password. There are MP commands to change usernames and passwords if you want the extra security.
If someone has changed the usernames and passwords and you don't know them, you can reset the MP to its default state if you have physical access to the system. Hold down the reset button (on the back panel of the MP card) while you apply power to the system. You'll get a prompt on the console to confirm the reset.
OpenVMS does not support the VGA port as a console. DECwindows supports the VGA port, and will start automatically by default if you have a keyboard and mouse connected at boot time.
You can select either of the serial ports for your console, but don't select more than one. The supported ports are the "Console" port on the MP or the console port on the system itself. You should make sure the standard input, standard output and standard error are all the same port. (You can relax these rules a bit and OpenVMS will still function, but you'll get annoying messages.) We recommend the MP console port when it is available (it is always available on the rx2600), but you can use the system console port instead if you prefer. You can have both ports connected to terminals (or terminal servers, emulators, etc.) and use both of them to communicate with the console firmware. But when you boot OpenVMS, please only have one active console port!

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
On an Integrity, there are two levels of password for the "console":
- the maintenance console (hardware) password; and
- the vms password (once you get the login message
From your message, you need the password for the Integrity console, not the OpenVMS password. I seem to recall that Ian is correct, but I am not sure (actually, I am pretty sure) that case does matter, and my mental recollection without checking the manuals is that it may very well be lowercase.
The OpenVMS password, can of course be bypassed if you have physical access to the console using a conversational boot and the procedure which is documented, if I recall correctly, in the System Manager's Manual.

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
Thank you for your replies, I have the problem with Open VMS password not the console passowrd. I tried "SYSTEM" but no luck. I got the procedure to break the login authorization or bypass the login procedure from HP Open VMS installation manual. But while starting the procedure it is askinig me to enter the command
>>> BOOT -FLAGS 0,1 [device_name]
Where should I give this command? How to get the command promt ">>>" . When I press Ctrl+P to halt the machine it is crashing and rebooting. Does halt means crashing in Open VMS?
Thanks,
~hem

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
now I understand your trouble.
On rx series, you can't enter in SRM console, simply because it doesn't exist. Fater you crashed system,if you hit any key it reboots again.
So, if you don't know system password, you have no any alternative. You can:
1.Enter in MP console
2.Enter in CM (Command Menu)
3.Force brute reboot with PC -G
4.Enter in live console (Ctrl + B)
5.After SCSI scanning type continuously Ctrl + C to avoid bootstrap.
6.Now you can see boot option menu; select EFI
7.set bootflg with appropriate value or else read my previous link to boot in conversional mode.

Re: Lost Username and Password for Open VMS Machine
Instead of the alpha console command
>>> BOOT -FLAGS 0,1 [device_name]
You need an EFI command similar to this:
fs1:\efi\vms> vms_loader -fl 0,1
The vms_loader application boots whatever disk it is loaded from (fs1: in this case), so you don't need to specify the device name on the command line.
The "0,1" boot flag will do a conversational boot, just as on Alpha. The rest of the instructions for conversational boot are the same on both platforms.
