%MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
I am getting the following error :
"
TAPE-E-MOUNT,
Error mounting tape device <>: %MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
"
when trying to do a backup on AlphaServer ES40 running on OpenVMS AXP Version V7.3-2.
show dev mk
Device Device Error Volume Free Trans Mnt
Name Status Count Label Blocks Count Cnt
$1$MKF400: (BIFR41) Online 31
We have checked the mini library and all seems to be fine from a hardware standpoint.
Can you please advise what I should be looking for ?
Thanks and Regards
Pascal

Re: %MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
Please identify the specific tape cartridge or tape reel, and the specific model tape drive involved with this mini library.
Is there a tape cartridge in the tape drive, and is the particular tape cartridge compatible with the particular tape drive, and has the tape cartridge been initialized on the appropriate density for the tape drive?
A common cause of this sort of error is a cartridge that is incompatible with the tape drive, or that has been initialized at an incompatible density. Details vary by the cartridge and tape drive.
The DDS cartridge compatibility varies by the tape length, for instance.
It's also possible that the cartridge simply needs to be ejected and reloaded.

Re: %MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
1. Your tape drive needs cleaning
2. The tape is offline in the drive
3. You have a hardware problem with either the tape cartridge or the tape drive.
If you have Media Robot Utility (MRU) installed, and you know how to use it, then do a ROBOT SHOW DRIVES and check the status of your tape drives.
Have you had this working previously?.

Re: %MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
to begin with,
WELCOME to the VMS Forum.
from Martin's answer:

<<<
Ah!
_IF_ you have that in combination with an MDR, the issue might well be the lability of the connection with the latter.
We typically have the MEDOFL once or twice a month, and until now power cycling the MDR (at least 10 seconds OFF) is the only remedy we know.

Re: %MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
If it's a library, most of the time the tape isn't loaded in the tapeunit.
Tape in the loader is one, loading into the tapeunit is two.
We had a TZ887 and this was our most common problem.

Re: %MOUNT-F-MEDOFL, medium is offline
The following fixed the issue :
power off / power on the Mini Library
and place a new DLT tape with a correct type.
Thanks for your prompt response.
