Re: New to OpenVMS and need help with steps for NEW install.
This might sound very obvious, but after many years of software support and hearing horror stories of installations or upgrades gone bad, I can say that this recipe is pretty much foolproof.
1) Read the Installation and Upgrade manual, following the path you require (ie: for a clean install of a standalone system you can skip the chapters on upgrades and clusters).
2) Go home and sleep on it.
3) Next day, read the manual again, this time working through any check lists.
4) If you have any questions or have trouble understanding the steps, call your customer support centre for clarification
5) Go home and sleep on it.
6) Take the guide and CDs plus any notes you've made from the check lists into the computer room and work through them step by step.
Like I said, sounds obvious, but remember that a lot of care has gone into writing the I&G Manual, specifically to make the task very straightforward. Also note that even us 25 year veterans in the CSC follow exactly this advice when performing upgrades or installations.

Re: New to OpenVMS and need help with steps for NEW install.
I'm with John on that!
Read carefully installation guide http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/72final/6522/6522pro.html
Prepare an your checklist.
For installation software you could install:
1) OpenVms from CD (booting CD)
2) Eventually MUP (Mandatory Update)
3) Decnet IV or DecNet plus
4) TCP/IP
5) Decwindow (if you use it)
6) Other software you need
Before install, you need license PAK for every software.
After installation, you need configure system; even you use as standalone system, I guess you have to configure service as LAT, telnet, ftp, decnet and add user and connect peripherals.
If you know old version of vms you can read this http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/721final/6614/6614pro.html
You can open any new thread about specific argument of installation: here somebody always will help you :-)

Re: New to OpenVMS and need help with steps for NEW install.
if you need any more encouragement, I lived by the specifications pretty much as John gave them, and from V3.6 up until V7.3-2 I can say it has a smooth track record, so:
Prepare according to the IG, take it one step at a time, and you can have faith in it.
Welcome to VMS (the name if you want to be a techie) aka OpenVMS (if yoy live by the naming rules of marketing & management.
And of course:
If in doubt, ask this forum, and you will be surprised about the amound, quality, and speed of help.
Success!
