No Console setup

I have VT510 connect to AlphaServer. The terminal id became TTA0: instead of OPA0:. So I don't have the console to display all the Operator log and control the system during the shutdown/reboot. Is there any way to recall the console back?

Thanks

Re: No Console setup

Did you maybe set the console on the console level (>>>) to graphics instead of serial.

What does a show dev opa0/full show?

Re: No Console setup

Regardless of what terminal you are using,
a REPLY/ENABLE command will enable you to see
the OPCOM messages.

Re: No Console setup

Kitti,

Both are right.
Advantage of the current setting is you CAN use edt/tpu (AKA eve), which is not possible for OP devices.

Re: No Console setup

TECO will work on any terminal (but that's
another topic altogether :-)

Re: No Console setup

Willem,
are you sure a VT510 connected to a serial OPA0: does not allow EDIT/TPU?

Just slightly after the stone age we connected VT-like terminals to the console port of our VAX-11/780s and used TPU.

Re: No Console setup

Any VT type terminal connected to OPA0 will
be usable for full screen editing as long
as an appropriate SET TERMINAL command is
performed. I have numerous such configurations
here.

Re: No Console setup

Kitty,
are you sure your VT is right connected?
I work usually on AlphaServer and they have always two ports, 1.st is OPA0: and 2.nd is TTA0: and they are very similar.
With last SRM (BIOS) startup operation are displayed on TTA0: too, while shutdown operation hide after terminal disabled; however, if you have a recent SRM you can boot and change SRM configuration from TTA0 so you can believe you are using console.

Re: No Console setup

Current TTA0: I can do EDT/TPU as normal. However, I will try REPLY/ENABLE and switch the port. Will let your guys know.

Thanks

Re: No Console setup

Kitty,
you are connected to 2.nd serial port, not console.

Re: No Console setup

If you still get no OPCOM messages, check broadcasts are enabled ($ SHOW B) if they're disable you'll need to do a $ SET TERM/PERM/BROAD

Re: No Console setup

If you tell us what model of Alphaserver your VT510 is connected to, someone can probably tell you which port is OPA0:, and how to locate it.

Re: No Console setup

My AlphaServer is DS10 466Mhz. (I think) It's old unit. We have it for Contingency purpose.

Re: No Console setup

Kitty,
DS10 has two 9 pin port (called db9); if you look with glass you can read two very little numbers, 1 and 2. The port numbere 1 is OPA0, the port numbered 2 is TTA0.
Move your cable from a port to another and you are connecetd to console.
You can move cable without reboot system.
