Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
Can everyone try to find some time to check their profile for questions asked, and close any old topics that have inadvertently been left open.
While doing this, please assign points wherever possible.
One detail that makes it a little more difficult than it need be is that the list of questions asked does not contain a 'topic status' field.
If it did, we could instantly identify those we had forgotten to close. Instead, we have to look at each topic before we find out whether it is still open or not...

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
Also there are chances that some one may have forgotten to close their thread as a result of keep expecting more specific answers, those situtations are ok, but still they may find time to clean their thread with their concern and zero points.
Is there a way that Mr.Jan can do something on this?. I am sure Jan's account will be added with minimum 1000 pending points in this process.
Thanks

Also, what difference does it make if they're open or closed?

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
I agree that we should not be too quick to close topics, but in truth the only loss in doing so is the ability to assign points to contributors.
IMHO a topic should be closed once it is resolved.
If the problem either has not, or cannot, be fixed from within this forum, I think it is reasonable to leave it open until a solution is found elsewhere. However, if the topics in this forum are going to be a truly useful source of future solutions, when a problem is fixed there should be (if at all possible) a comment added to report what the solution was.
Clearly this will never become 100%, because people will forget they have an open topic on 'that' problem, but the more that do get closed, the better we can know that a particular problem can be resolved by reference to relevant topics in this forum.
Also, it seems that a high proportion of the open topics I have seen (a tiny minority of the whole) have not had any points assigned. Closure seems to be when most people who are going to assign points at all do so.
Would anyone object to receiving an email maybe twice a year containing a list of the questions they raised that are still open 3 months after the topic was created ?
IF the concensus is 'agree to this' could we request it as a new feature within ITRC ?

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
One problem is that it does NOT tell you which questions are open, and which are closed.
We could do with some sort of flag there, preferably textual rather than an icon.
e.g.
Questions or topics I have posted:
» Open topics that are well past their sell-by date. Open
» My Alpha died ! Alphaserver 1000a 5/333 Closed

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
it's actually:
My question(s)
It would be helpful, if - in addition to the following links in that section:
Questions or topics with rated solutions
Questions or topics with unassigned points
a link like:
Questions or topics still open
could be added. Then it would be easy to find your un-closed topics and close them.
On the other hand, ITRC is not a call handling system, so leaving topics open is not a real problem...

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
Plus, don't you hate it when you read through a thread only to discover that the months-old topic has only popped up again because someone asked the OP to assign points?
If closing an old thread wouldn't pop to the front of the list, then I'd say do it. But, do you really want to have to wade through dozens of "closed" threads to find a real question?
I say, don't post to 3 month old threads even if they seem unanswered. We must figure that by that time either the OP has solved the problem and moved on or found a work-around and moved on. Whichever.
I vote to leave things alone. If a question doesn't get answered in a reasonable time, and the OP still needs help, then the OP should keep posting to the thread to keep it active. More than likely, we'll see the same question over in c.o.v. or openvms.org if there's no answer here.

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
closing an old topic does NOT put it to the front of the current list of topics (if you just enter your text and close it), so it would not disturb this forum.

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
all things considered, I feel a tendency to support Volker's suggestion: Add a caption "Questions still open".
And being at it anyway, in the Responses category I would like to see a chapter "Unrated Solutions" separated from "Rated 0 - 7"
But all in all, it is rather less important.
As an aside: is this subject not better suited for the "Your questions regarding ITRC Forums" forum? Or was it the express intent to collect just the VMS-sy view on this issue?

I never thought to look for such a forum...
The ONLY place I ever look at is here.
To be fair, I did once post a question on a Compaq laptop, but no-one ever answered me, and I found my own solution. I have never been back there since that was sorted out.
If nothing else, I have strred up a bit of debate. Is there any way to actually MOVE an existing topic to a different forum ?

Yes -- in that same forum ask a moderator to do so. They WILL greatly appreciate it if you make the job easier by adding a pointer to the thread to be moved (this one, in this case).

Re: Open topics that are well past their sell-by date.
You're right. Just tried it. Hadn't really noticed before. Just figured that any activity pushed it up. It seems reasonable that closing an active thread should move it up to a place of attention so anyone interested can read the solution without constantly searching back.
I'll stand behind the rest of my commentary, though.
Looking at the number of people who don't follow the "rules" I doubt that anything we "rule followers" say will change things.
I personally don't care much about points or hats except they give some indication of a person's envolvement here. I find the congratulatory threads amusing because if one only posts to those and posts to every one they'd be able to move up the hat ladder without ever having to share their "wisdom". If you look you'll see that, except for one, I don't post to them. (Not that I'm bitter because I didn't get a thread when I changed hats. Honest I'm not. Too late now, anyway, so please don't bother:-)
BTW: I liked the green hat best. I mean, really, don't most people become a "pro" _after_ they graduate?
;-)

being the one that often starts congrats threads, and tries not to let the event go unnoticed, I must confess that for whatever reason YOUR promotion escaped my attention.
I hope you will accept my red-faced apologies.
"Don't bother", so I will will not open a very belated thread (it would indeed be a little too late) but nevertheless I WILL take this opportunity to congratulate you, and thank you for your contributions.
