Re: OpenVMS installation

Geir,

upon re-reading your message:

When booting from the CD, a "naked" LICENSE REGISTER (and VMSLICENSE.COM) will try to update the ldb file on the CD - no go. Mount your system disk, and define the logical name LMF$LICENSE to point to the disk's LMF$LICENSE.LDB. Then the LMF commands will work.

Or, boot normally, and log in at the system
console terminal. You don't need a valid VMS
license to log in at the console.

Steven,

If you have a graphical console, you must have at least a DW-MOTIF license.

It's been a while, but I thought that the
"glass TTY" worked (as well as it ever does)
with no license for anything.

Whose memory is worse?

*If* you could set the WINDOW_SYSTEM parameter to 0. There were some VMS versions that re-set the parameter and started DECwindows nonetheless...

But, of course, you are correct. "Glass TTY" should work without any license, just like a serial console.

Re: OpenVMS installation

Hi,

Still have problems to install OpenVMS. This time, I have problems with license (not able to log into the system, reason is "no license registered").

I'm sure that all license was registered and enabled when I installed OpenVMS first time.

I got following messages if I want to register or list license:

"Cannot find license database: sys$common:[sysexe]lmf$license.ldb".

If I execute following commands I can see lmf$license.ldb under following directories:

dka0:[sys0.syscommon.sysexe] and
dka0:[vms$common.sysexe]

If I try top copy the ldb file from one of these directories to sys$common:[sysexe] I got following error:

"device currently write locked"

It's not possible to create files in the directory. I have booted the workstation from dka0, and everything looks normal when the system started.

I have tried lmf,vmslicens.com as suggested, but I still have trouble.

I hope that someone can help me.

Thanks

Where are you trying to log in? The console
terminal should be ok (I claim).

"LICENSE CREATE"?

Typical, if you booted from a CD-ROM.

Which disk are you booting from?

Re: OpenVMS installation

Hi,

Thanks for the answer.

If I boot the internal disk dka0, the Motif login window is automatically started. If I try to logon the system, I got an error message "No active license for this product"

I only want to activate the license. I know that the license was registered during installation.

Therefore I thought that if I booted from a CD, I will have access to DCL (mount the internal disk). So far soo good, but the followinf file does not exist: sys$common:[sysexe]lmf$license.ldb. If I try to create it, I got an error message: "device currently write locked".

If I try to create a file on dka0:[000000], that's ok. So the disk is writeable and accessable. Any comments?

Thanks

Re: OpenVMS installation

When you boot from the CD-ROM, SYS$COMMON is
on the CD-ROM, hence read-only. Read the
posting dated "Feb 1, 2006 13:57:35 GMT", or
specify "/DATABASE = file_spec" on all the
LICENSE commands.

Re: OpenVMS installation

From the HELP:

LICENSE

LOAD [for example]

/DATABASE

/DATABASE=filespec

Location of the License Database. The default file specification
is defined by the logical name LMF$LICENSE, which points to
SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]LMF$LICENSE.LDB on an unmodified OpenVMS
system. Use this optional qualifier only if you do not use the
default License Database name and location.
