PCI slots in use on an ES40

HELP....

I am trying to determine what PCI cards are installed on an ES40. Its on a customer site and we can't shut it down. I have used the clue config command but I was wondering if there is a way to get more information.

I'm trying to fing out how many spare pci slots there are.

Re: PCI slots in use on an ES40

Between CLUE CONFIG and CLUE FRU and SHOW DEVICE, you should have sufficient detail on the AlphaServer ES40 series configuration to determine what is in the box.

Additionally, consider asking the customer take a digital photo of the back of the box at decently-high resolution and lighting, and email it to you. Specifically, a picture of the external side of the PCI cage.

I tend to prefer to keep a system log for the boxes I deal with. And I do also recommend use of digital pictures for recording details such as the internal bus configuration, and the model and serial number sticker.

Re: PCI slots in use on an ES40

Hello Mike,
Hoff mentioned the most like actions.
The attachment contains two ES40 rear view 'templates'. One in VISIO 2000 format and one as 'GIF' picture.
Together with digital pictures from the server you could much better document the system configuration.
Additional I would like to recommend to use the server mainentance or service guide.
Together with the CLUE CONFIG information and the location information it will round up the 'picture'. The refered PCI slots and their location found in CLUE CONFIG can be easier 'translated' to physical location with the help of the mentioned server mainentance or service guide for ES40.

Further, another link for VISIO templates:
http://www.visiocafe.com/
Older systems could be found in the classics zip archives. For some unknown reasons the templates for AS4100 and ES40 in these archieves are corrupt. Therefore I redesigned the ES40 rear based on a copy of an ES45.
DS25, the PCI slot numbering on the rear view is wrong. It should be the opposite way numbered.
I hope I give you some more ideas how to get a useful system documentation.

Re: PCI slots in use on an ES40

Mike

Here is a program I found somewhere that scans the PCI bus and details the devices on it. You will need to extract the code from the first file which contains the usage instructions. The 2nd file translates the codes found to vendor names and is required. I have tried the programs casually and it seems to do as advertised. Good luck -

Re: PCI slots in use on an ES40

Paul,

not trying to be smart, but my slightly hacked version works better (tested on VMS I64 8.3). The pci_vendors.txt file isn't required, but makes the output more readable (if it has the right format :-).
