Problem booting VMS 7.2-1 when 2nd KGPSA is installed
I have to cntrl-p to halt it. Then disconnected the fibre from the back of new KGPSA and rebooted the system. Sytems boots ok. If I now connect the fibre back and check the paths on HSG80 the two paths are offline. When I do mc sysman io auto then that command hangs doesn't come out to prompt. If I take the fibre connection of that 2nd KGPSA out the command gives me a prompt. But gives an error
%IOGEN-I-FIBREPOLL, scanning for devices through FIBRE port PGA0
%IOGEN-F-FTLIOERR, fatal I/O error while trying to access device
I have tried another KGPSA but still get the same error. I have even tried the fibre of the working KGPSA and connected to failing KGPSA and left the working KGPSA disconnected to rule out the cable. The sytem still refuses to boot.
I can't go to VMS 7.3-1 because of upgrade issues with some of the Oracle applications that are on this system. My patch level is
Update V3.0, SYS V12.0, Fibre_SCSI 6.0 etc.
I have another 7.2-1 system that has two kgpsa installed and has all four paths online and boots perfectly well.
Any idea what could be going wrong? Is there a fix to this. Is there something on bootflags using some large number, something like 0,000001 or 0,200000 - not exactily sure whats that meant for. Haven't tried as couldn't find any documentation.
Please can someone help. Thanks

Look for "boot flag".

Re: Problem booting VMS 7.2-1 when 2nd KGPSA is installed
First, I'd make sure the two KGPSAs have the same firmware and matching model numbers. There are several options.
Second, did the second KGPSA go into a the same PCSI bus as a graphics card? This is an unsupported configuration and sometimes missed when installing an HBA. There are 2 PCI buses on a 4100, see http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/systems/as4100/docs/config_install_guide.pdf for details.
I've heard in a system will less than 4 gb of memory you can get away with this,
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=816590 but it's still "unsupported."

Re: Problem booting VMS 7.2-1 when 2nd KGPSA is installed
is the new KGPSA set to FABRIC mode ?
>>> WWIDMGR -SHOW ADAP
Is it the same type of KGPSA ? Does OpenVMS recognize it ?
Once the system hangs during boot, you could force a crash (CTRL-P and >>> CRASH) and look at the FC data structures in the crash.
You can check the firmware using
>>> SHOW CONF
or
$ ANAL/SYS
SDA> FC SHOW DEVICE FGA0
SDA> FC SHOW DEVICE FGB0

Re: Problem booting VMS 7.2-1 when 2nd KGPSA is installed
Looks like I have a problem with Firmware version.
SDA> fc show dev fga
FGA0: operational firmware revision DS3.81A4
port_name(adapter_id) = 1000-0000-C92C-096B, node_name(host_id) = 2000-0000-C92C-096B
SDA> fc show dev fgb
FGB0: operational firmware revision DS3.82A1
port_name(adapter_id) = 1000-0000-C92B-22CD, node_name(host_id) = 2000-0000-C92B-22CD
FGA has a lower version than FGB. I have another 4100 with two HBAs and that works fine. The firmware on that is DS3.91A1. Is that the version I should go to?
How do I upgrade the firmware and where will I get the DS3.82A1 or DS3.91A1? Any pointers highly appreciated.
Below is â >>>SHOW CONFIGâ etc. when I had the box at chevrons and after we installed the 2nd KGPSA. The working KGPSA (WWN 2000-0000-c92b-22cd) â kgpsa1 is on PCI0 slot 5. Is it the VGA slot. Is it working because I have less than 4MB memory.
