Questions about OpenVMS support

Dear all:

We noticed that there will be some new versions of OpenVMS for Alpha be released in the next few years, but the hardware support of AlphaServer was end of support in 2011,so we wonder if we can get support of OpenVMS for Alpha in the future?

Looking forward to your reply.

BR

Re: Questions about OpenVMS support

BR,

you'll find the official answers about OpenVMS Support in the current OpenVMS Roadmaps.

HPE:  http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04623087  (as of April 2016)

VSI:    https://www.vmssoftware.com/pdfs/VSI_Roadmap_20170306.pdf  (as of 6-MAR-2017)

You can draw your own conclusions based on the currentness of those roadmaps.

Note that PVS or MPS w/o SE (Sustaining Engineering) will not provide new bug-fixes. You'll get access to the knowledge databases, the existing (old) patches and access to the HPE Support Center and also probably RTNV (right-to-new-version), which only helps, if you want or could update your OpenVMS Alpha systems.

Also note that the VSI OpenVMS Service Roadmap does not include any OpenVMS Alpha Service/Support information.

For 'long-term' OpenVMS support, you might need to talk to VSI.

Volker.

Re: Questions about OpenVMS support

Mike,

thanks for pointing to the current VSI OpenVMS Roadmap (dated 25-SEP-2017).

Now OpenVMS Alpha 8.4-2L1 and higher show up in the 'VSI OpenVMS Alpha Support Roadmap' !

Volker.

Re: Questions about OpenVMS support

The fact that the hardware support has or is ending has no bearing on the support of the OS.  Many people running on AlphaServers who worry about hardware supportability have moved to emulators.  At this point, almost all of our Managed Services customers have made the move to emulation.

If you are not familiar with Alpha emulation, feel free to contact me, I can fill you in.
