I filled a last minute speaker slot in the OpenVMS track for HP Tech Forum 2005 in Orlando.
At times it is hard to find in the session catalogue, so I want to give it a little more visibility. Hope that's ok?
In a few days I will attach the slides of the presenation to a reply in this topic.
Session Title #2396 RMS FDL File Magic
Length: 75 minutes
Level: Intermediate
Abstract: This session introduces the RMS sequential file and indexed file internal structure and demonstrates various FDL instructions available to influence that structure.
• Learn how to make the index root the first bucket in the files and why would you want to do this.
• Hear about the effect of selecting compression.
• Find out about the shortest FDL file to create an indexed file and why.
• Discover how to creatively use FDL and SET FILE/ATTR to make record terminators come or go for sequential files.
• Obtain file conversion hints and get your file questions answered.
Schedule Information: Wednesday 11:00 AM
Room: S220F
See you there?
Hein.

sorry, I can't see you in Orlando but I know how wide is your knowledge of RMS so I'd like to translate that work for Italian people.
Would you like send me something about your presentation, after you showed it in Orlando?
You can send to antonio(at)openvms(dot)org

Re: Session 2396 on OpenVMS RMS FDL File magic @ Orlando
Allan, good to hear that the this topic was useful at least for one.
John, Thanks for the endorsement.
Ian, That'll do nicely. Great!
Antonio, Thanks for your announcement also.
If there is anything in RMS space I would like to see translated, then it is my earlier 'duplicate chain' aka 'the million dollar bit' writeup:
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/journal/v2/articles/rms.html
This describes the detection and correction of an RMS usage feature which slows down just about every site using RMS. So far, every single RMS site I have ever visited has had at least one severe case of excessive duplicate key chains. Maybe folks are smarter in Italy, but the odds are that it has relevance there also.
Thanks,
Hein.

Re: Session 2396 on OpenVMS RMS FDL File magic @ Orlando
just curious, but I noted you still showing the "HP Moderator" symbol.
Is this to imply you will still be a moderator, or are they just slow in removing it?
Once again: succes in your next career!

Re: Session 2396 on OpenVMS RMS FDL File magic @ Orlando
In the opening topic I promissed to post the slides here. So here there are.
The actual presentation did not exactly follow the abstract, but it was all about RMS and FDL and stuff nonetheless. A good time was had by all! Only some 20 attendees, but they all seemed attentive for two, so I'm pleased.
Jan, yeah I expect the [hp] icon next to my name to dissapear real soon now. And actually... while I was already given the flag, we never finalized the moderator privs. Oh well.
Thanks all!
Hein.
