String symbol assign offset >= 239 characters
It seems that I cannot assign a string to a symbol offset greater than 238 characters. I know that there is a limit of 768 on the offset+size, but I'm well below that. It appears that the symbol "x" is being expanded, and when that happens it exceeds the 255 character DCL command buffer. If offsets use the DCL command buffer, it makes the 768 character offset limit pretty meaningless.
$ show sym record
RECORD = ""
$ x = f$fao("!238*A")
$ record[92,250]:="''x'"
$ show sym record
RECORD = " AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA "
$ x = f$fao("!239*A")
$ record[92,250]:="''x'"
%DCL-W-BUFOVF, command buffer overflow - shorten expression or command line
\RECORD[92,250]:=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
$ show sym record
RECORD = ""
$ x = f$fao("!238*A")
$ record[92,250]:="''x'"
$ show sym record
RECORD = " AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA "
$ x = f$fao("!239*A")
$ record[92,250]:="''x'"
%DCL-W-BUFOVF, command buffer overflow - shorten expression or command line
\RECORD[92,250]:=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Re: String symbol assign offset >= 239 characters
I forgot to mention the very important information that this is 8.2 Alpha with Update 5.0 and Sys 6.0.

Re: String symbol assign offset >= 239 characters
I hate to keep answering my own question, but it appears to work on i64 8.3 but not on i64 8.2-1. I see that a DCL patch was released in April for 7.3-2. Maybe we're just waiting for one for 8.2-x.
