Thanks again, Guy!

Hi all,

check this out:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/comp.os.vms/browse_thread/thread/ef1f0f81acab781a/5fc655d392b6e736#5fc655d392b6e736

I think it's great, and I DO second the backporting suggestion!

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

Amazing. I still remember the DECUS Europe session in 1988, wenn the SIRs (System Improvement Requests) were discussed with DEC.

One request was to enhance BACKUP with a CONTROL-T output. The VMS people were not very receptive to this idea, but wrote it down. Apparently, they were more eager to get us all to migrate to VAX/VMS V5.0 ;-)

Well, I was quite surprised to see the enhancement some time later (V5.2, together with the BACKUP 'rewrite', if I remember correctly).

And SEARCH got a similar improvement (V6.1?).

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

Thats great,

No more procedures and programs that spit tons of output lines, only to see the progress. And probably defining a logical name is much faster than writing to a terminal or log file.

Indeed a very useful improvement. I certainly gonna make use of it.

As Jan said: thank you very much, Guy.

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

Bojan,

it is not even a Logical name, it is a SYMBOL!
And read the example in some detail, and you will see WHY: a local symbol can be defined differently at EACH execution level, and ^T will show the values of ALL levels!

Good thing, both the devlopment itself AND the backport: Just show what you want to see.
I'vre read the thread in comp.os.vms (thanks Jan for attending us), I like the idea tha David Dachtera putted: make it a bitmask. Hopefully, Guy reads this forum as well since I would like to reserve a few bits for "custom use", which can be usefull in debugging (non-DCL) code (Show me some specified data on ^T)

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

Hello,
User informations by ctrl-t is a great idea!
I'd like some other feature.
- Sometimes might be usefull disable system message.
- In DCL, be able to catch ctrl-t same as ctrl-y; for example ON CONTROL_T THEN ...
I'd like disable "cancel" message after ctrl-y and or ctrl-c.

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

Guy,

Many thanks for another useful feature .

As far as we know, you are listening and executing wat we ask. A lot of other college want to add our questions but are hold back by the financial guys. You know how to get around these people, keep this up and going.
We looking forward to the next fine implementation .

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

Guy,

Will you be able to port this to V7.3-2? It may be a while till we get up to 8.2

Thanks

Re: Thanks again, Guy!

I need to get internal approval to backport
this to V7.3-2. V8.2 might be easier. My
plan was to try both V7.3-2 and V8.2

More to come soon.

Happy Holidays.
