What is OpenVMS ?
Can anyone tell me what is OpenVMS? Can CBA (cost benefit analysis) be done by Openvms. Presently the client is looking for OpenVMS for Service Level Management and Business Level Management. Can it be done?
A link covering all this topic can be useful.

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
VMS is by far the best operating system in the world. It's reliable, stable, secure, etc., etc.
It runs on VAX, Alpha, and Integrity servers.
Have a look at
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/index.html
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/news/alpha_integrity_brochure.html
As to CBA, I know that CBA stands for
"Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) estimates and totals up the equivalent money value of the benefits and costs to the community of projects to establish whether they are worthwhile."
Are you asking for a CBA regarding the purchase of OpenVMS and related hardware? Or are you asking for an application on OpenVMS that supports CBA?

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
My question is how far the this OpenVMS is related to Service Level Management and Business Process management.
I need to make a study of how to reduce the cost of the company by implementing OpenVMS.
Just advice me, if u know anything abt CBA. I dont have any idea. If u have any document of CBA given by HP is also appreciated

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
The current infrastructure is being managed using tools such as BMC Patrol,OVO and CA.
In order to improve the performance of the existing OpenVMS environment we need to evaluate the tools available for
1.Business process management for openvms
2.Service level management for openvms.
Hence we need to come up with a CBA to understand the feasibility of monitoring the openVMS environment on the above two parameters and suggest an appropriate solution.
Thanks in advance for all help.
regards,
Gopalan

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
See
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/whitepapers/index.html
section "OpenVMS total cost of ownership" for some data.
As for a specific application to implement SLM & BLM, you might want to search in
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/solutions/matrix/i64partner_a.html
Good luck,

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
Additional information about OpenVMS and the environment can be found at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/info/SPD/#SPD_O.
HP has many options for support, they can staff a management team if you desire and can locate a sales type. There are also updated tools available. Some of these may require recent versions of VMS.
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/serv_support.html
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/system_management.html
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/svctools/
You may want to bring in HP or a third party to review your environment and provide suggestions. Some of the forum provide consulting services and service agreements.

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
an Italian version of the OPENVMS.ORG WEB site has opened recently. You may find local contacts with strong OpenVMS background easier this way:

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
I have attached one document taken from HP site, which explains in detail about IT functions to reduce cost, increase efficiency and support PBSC requirements.
You can find very good info about the following topics...
1. The historical evolution of SLAâ s, Key SLM Terms,
2. Organizing IT to support SLAs
3. SLM Objectives
4. SLM (Service Level Management) benefits
5. SLM Process
(Phase 1:
INITIATE
Phase 2:
NEGOTIATE
Phase 3:
PERFORM
Phase 4:
MONITOR & Reveiw
Phase 5:
COMPLETE)
6. What is IT Service Management (ITSM)
7. What is the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL®)?
8. Business Benefits of ITSM
and about the following Tools:
CMDB Query Tool
Data Manipulation and Reporting Tools
SLA/OLA Templates
Service specifications
I hope it will be good resource to start with.

Re: What is OpenVMS ?
Could it be that Gopalan means OpenVIEW instead of OpenVMS ?
The question then makes so much more sense to me ....
Gopalan: OpenView is HP's solution for monitoring & managing a company's IT infrastructure. Heart of this suite of applications is OpenView Operations, formerly known as (a.o.) ITO.
For OpenView there also exist a bunch of forums. The starting point for those forums is: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=121
