When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Does anyone know when 8.2 is shipping in the UK?

I know the road map says Q4 2004 but it's not long till 2005!

Easy 10 points...... ;-)

Thanks

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Rob,

the OpenVMS V8.2 release has not yet been announced, so I don't think that 'ship dates' will be available.

Hi,

The only thing resembling V8.2, you can get your hands on is the E8.2 field test release from August 2004.
During the TUD held in October in Nieuwegein, Holland, it was said that Q4 2004 should be understood as December 32nd 2004. So I think we'll see V8.2 somewhere in february 2005.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Rob, the V8.2 release is undergoing final polishing so it is as shiny as possible when released :-) It will then go to manufacturing who will make the CD's and DVD's and put them in those nice cardboard boxes. I expect to receive something in the post in Feb or parhaps with the Q1 condist.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

I was there with Kris, and yes, someone in Engeneering formulated it somewhat like this: "Expect the final release yo be OK'ed not long before december 31th, but customers should allow for the necessary logistics".
.. another way of saying, probably not long before february local (=USA), while overseas takes some longer.

The beancounters can always introduce a Q5. That keeps it at least in Y2004 ;-)

I rather like to see engineering spend a few days more than let an embarrasing bug slip through.

Uwe, I am FULLY with you!!

Remember, very recently, the release of HBMM?

WE happened to be lucky enough to have some more urgent priorities for some days, but we HAVE been waiting for it for years, and initially we were "a little incontent" with the delay.
That changed when the put-on-hold, and the error report, appeared...

But, someone else DID get burned, and I much prefer those issues found at Engeneering or Quality Assurance BEFORE release!!

So, having to wait is an insurance premium __WE__ are more than ready to pay!

Like the Itanium boot, you can expect it sometime around December 63rd :-)

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Hello Jan,
I know I have ignored HBMM for a reason ;-)

On the other hand, I can understand the engineering's argument that _somebody_ has to be the first - else the remaining errors will never be found. It is just that *I* cannot afford to do unpaid Q&A for HP or any other supplier.

Uwe,

'..._somebody_ has to be the first - else ...'
Whe know, somebody has to be the first.
When we where moving from 7.2.1 to 7.3.1 this VMS version was already 1 year old and we where the first who was running to a very big bug in LOGINOUT.EXE. Too much identifiers per user etc. When such a user logged in, the system crashes. Yeh, whe know somebody has to be the first, even for a tested and 1 year old proven OS.

These days, operating systems are very complex beasts and many, many users don't exercise their OS very deep. I am not surprised if even basic things get detected much later.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Field test for V8.2 is ending...

"OpenVMS Version 8.2 has started the final qualification period, which means that the release will be heading to final production soon.

As things stand now, we anticipate an early January submission to manufacturing, barring unforeseen circumstances of course!"

Hello to allbodies,

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Antonio, as final qualification testing has not yet finished yet it is possible that the DVD you have for itanium systems does not include some fixes that appear in the final V8.2 kit.
(it ain't over 'til its over as someone from the other side of the pond may put it :-)
What you have is the final build plus fixes up to some date.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

the SDK I64 VMS system will announce itself as E8.2

The final V8.2 for I64 is a lot better.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Jan and Ian,
because I'm busy, I didn't carefully look at cd. After your posts, I see printed date on label that's August 2004.
Sob, it isn't the final release.
Thank for your notices.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Today I've receive newsletter by dspp program; here the contents:

OpenVMS for Integrity servers â Developerâ s Note
Field test will be ending soon and the final builds of Version 8.2 will be qualified before the January 2005 announcement. Developers using early o/s baselevels, compilers and tools should recompile before shipping applications to customers. There have been application errors that were solved by re-compiling with the latest s/w.

Re: When Is 8.2 Shipping In the UK?

Disclaimer - this is NOT an official announcement (but it's based on very current plans). Subject to change!

Current plans would have V8.2 submitted to manufacturing within the first half of January 2005, which would have it shipped by the end of January.

(hoping that's vague enough that it doesn't consititute a "leak" ;-)

Remember that the official rule in Digital days was that shipping dates could only ever be in the past - Don't make the promise, then it can't be broken. Not sure if that's as official now, but the principle remains valid.

Rob,

from your profile:

I have assigned points to 20 of 79 responses to my questions.

Maybe you can find some time to do some assigning?

Mind, I do NOT say you necessarily need to give lots of points. It is fully up to _YOU_ to decide how many. If you consider an answer is not deserving any points, you can also assign 0 ( = zero ) points, and then that answer will no longer be counted as unassigned.
Consider, that every poster took at least the trouble of posting for you!

To easily find your streams with unassigned points, click your own name somewhere.
This will bring up your profile.
Near the bottom of that page, under the cation â My Question(s)â you will find â questions or topics with unassigned points â Clicking that will give all, and only, your questions that still have unassigned postings.

Thanks on behalf of your Forum colleagues.
