Hein's suggestion to create a parallel directory structure making the large directory into several with fewer files in each proved to be a much more efficient environment to ZIP the files. Once done, one set of directories were removed and the files deleted from the other with DFU.

Don't let hundreds of thousands of files pile up ... especially if you have old, slow hardware!!
